I recently found a white wire under my dash, left of the steering column, that had some sort on/off switch. When I tried what the switch was for, it fell apart. Playing with the ends of the wires I discovered they had something to do with the pop-up headlamps. So I installed a new switch and voilá, I can now drive around with "running lights" but with the pop-ups closed. I like that! I included some pics of the switch I installed, and also of my fuse-box with an arrow to what I believe must be the same white wire (going to the fuse for the headlamp motors).
Also a picture of the triangular pieces of carpetting I added to the underside of my reardeck lid. According to the parts manuals I have, the carb'ed cars should have these. Mine is a late serial# (33007), and when it was built in 1980, they had already started production of the injected cars, which did not have the carpets. I think this is why mine did not have it. My car also has the Nardi steering wheel that I've only seen supplied originally on injected and late carb'ed 308's.

I forgot to mention that regarding the modified headlamp set-up, it was ofcourse the previous owner who made all the preparations. I am not very good with electrics myself.....

early cars (uk and Aus at least), has this as standard. Later cars were modified with a simple jump wire on the back of the relay board to keep the lamps up all the time the side lamps are on.

This was done because if you're driving along at night on full beam, then dip them when you meet oncoming traffic, it's very easy to move the lever too far and actually turn the lamps back to side only. By the time the pods have gone down and up again when you realise your mistake, the oncoming traffic is quite likely to be buried in your bonnet....it's happened a few times....

Curious...you say your car is an 80, yet it has the early carb engine bonnet? Was it changed out at some point?

(The vents on your engine cover match the 76/77 cars, the later cars had more venting on the rear deck lid).

Sean, that applies to US cars only as far as I know. All Euro carbed cars have this type of reardeck lid.

    Hi ottovalvole,

an older italian traffic rule was: Parking lights on if you drive through a tunnel. But today you see all the cars with 2x55 Watt headlights in the tunnels. Maybe that's related to your modification because you have a car formaly registrated in Italy.

Anyway, it is still italian 'driving style' to run with parking lights on the whole day. Let's follow this vintage behaviour :)

This can also be done via the use of two diodes. I did this years ago on my '78 GTS. When wiring in the diodes, it is automatic, the headlights stay down with the parking lights and only come up with the headlights.
