This morning, I was supposed to catch a flight for a meeting in New Orleans. Instead, at about 3 AM, I woke up with a searing, and unfortunately familiar pain in my left flank. Yep kidney stone #4 for me.

Talk about unbearable. It's been almost 3 years since my last stone, and since then I have been really good about drinking lots of water. Lots of water, and pissing like a fish. I thought perhaps it would have been my last, but I was wrong. Damn.

So, instead of being on a flight to New Orleans, or even enjoying Crystal cove here in SoCal (which looked like it was a good one), I got to spend some quality time in the ER. Even had the pleasure of barfing on the nurse as she was trying to give me an IV.

Just waiting for the stone to pass now. I'm pretty nicely drugged up on vicodin. If all goes well, the doc thinks it should pass within the next 12 hours or so. I rebooked my flight to NO for monday. Need to make an appointment with the pee-pee doctor as soon as I get back.

Thanks for letting me vent. I'm sure our resident pee-pee doc would understand.

I'm fortunate, as I can only imagine the mind-(and everything else)-bending pain. You've got my sympathy. Can I empathize? I don't know. I mean, if someone came up to you, and said, "I feel your pain"... what would you do to that person?

    Dom,

Wishing you a very speedy recovery. I've never had the displeasure of kidney stones (I have had the discomfort of an appendix burst), so I cannot imagine to know what you're going through. And for the fourth time....

    Get better soon.

    Andrew

Sorry to hear it... Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Uro - Is there something you can do before they get like this?

    Can you test for them?

    Yes.

Annual physical will often find microscopic blood before the stones cause trouble.

Then you often get an x-ray to look for them.

    Family history is VERY important.

Have seen HUGE numbers of uric acid stones with the popular protein diets in the last 3 years.

Depends on a lot of factors. Small peripheral stones you leave alone, stones in the renal pelvis or ureter, stones associated with infection or damage to the kidney, stones that are growing need treatment of some sort.

Most important to do a REAL metabolic work up to prevent future stones.

    Ok,

The reason I asked is I haven't been to a doc in 7 yrs. Then this yr. I've been making the rounds. I went and saw a urologist for a checkup last week. He seemed a little surprised because I didn't come in for a problem. He took a urine sample and quick physical and said everything looked ok. I have no idea if he did what yuor suggesting. I was trying to be proactive and I'm not sure it was worth it. I think I'll contact the office for the records and see what was actually checked.

    Good Idea.

    Usually, depending on age:

Check Blood pressure, urine for blood, protein, bacteria, other things; physical check for abd masses, lymph nodes, hernias, testicular masses, other scrotal masses, discharge from penis, stool for blood, sphincter tone, prostate probs.

Often a PSA blood test and older guys a flow rate to check for blockage.

    Thanks for the good wishes.

For now, I am feeling fine, though it may be the vicodin talking. I think I may have passed the stone, but we will wait and see. Hopefully the worst of the pain is over.

Hey Urotrash, what exactly do you mean by a Metabolic work up? Do you mean examine my diet, fluid intake etc., or are you talking about a 24h urine catch and analysis? Or something else?

    Thanks,
    Dom

He is talking about a 24 hour urine collection checking levels of calcium, uric acid, oxalate and a host of other chemicals as well as blood tests looking at serum calcium and uric acid levels. Abnormalities in these tests can suggest dietary problems (uro trash elluded to this with the protein diet) or endocrinary problems (hyperparathyroid etc). The key is there are a NUMBER of reasons why people form stones and a 24 hour eval can unfortunately miss the cause in a significant number of patients. Bottom line is if you have a history of stones you need to see doctor on a regular basis looking for recurrence (40% of first time stone patients will form more stones in the future).
    Take care,
    Chris
