Anyone know how to remove the passanger air bag dash panel on a 96 355 spider ??

The black leather covering on mine has gone creased so i want to smooth it out.

Any chance of the air bag firing if I start fiddling with it ??

    cheers
    Scott

    Scott,

This picture shows the screws that secure the cover - pretty sure it won't fire on you, but I will ask the question and let you know.

Before disconnecting the air bag turn off the battery, carry out your repairs and refit everything, re-connect the battery and let the engine run so that the ecu's can re-initialise themselves. Worst case is that the air bag warning light will stay on which means a trip to your dealer who will have to use their SD1 to cancel out the light.

The screws labled number 16 are very strange. I attempted to remove them recently without any luck. Undoing the bolts in the rear will not allow you to remove the bag. The side mounted screws have a star head with a center piece poking through the center. Anyone have a clue as to what type of tool is needed?

Scott, You must first remove the center and right air vents to access the screws that hold the airbag in. Although they snap into place when assembled, they can be a bear to remove. And be very careful with the right vent for the vent closing linkage can be easly broken. You will also need a #40 (if I remember correctly) security torx bit to remove the #16 screws. I would definately leave the battery turned off until you have reinstalled the airbag. We usually have to get the outer cover recovered because the leather has shrunk so bad.
