I have been collecting / updating things. Lets see how this first page looks: aehaas Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here is Red Line, few changes: NOTE - Castrol data is out but in an obscure form. The viscosity is only given at 210 F SUS, and there is no pour points among other things. Image Unavailable, Please Login
While I use Mobile 1 15w50 in my BB512i and will continue to do so, I do note that my car uses a little more oil with synthetic oil over dino or blended oil. Why do you think that is the case...any ideas?
I was told to run 15w-50 in my Lotus but have doubts as if that is the right oil I should be using. Any ideas? I live in Mn and like to run when it is cooler out (40-90 degrees out). Should I be using a lighter weight oil?
Pat - 15W-50 should be fine in the summer and then change to 10W-40 in the winter. Thats what I do with the 348 to keep the car happy during both seasons. If I use 15W50 in the winter the car takes for ever to warm up and oils pressure grows slow. If I use 10W40 I have my cam seal leak in the summer. To make you feel happy about the Lotus my friend uses the same oils and reports the same behavior. Sucks you cant make it to Brainerd....I am going 3 more times so you will have to make one of them.
At what point do you change to the 10w-40 for winter? Thanks for the advice. I will make it to Brainerd. I have to also buy some new tires for the Lotus as the backs I can almost feel the tread marker.
I use Castrol Syntec 5w 50 in the winter and Mobile 1 15w 50 in the summer in my BB512i. I have noticed that the engine burns a little of the Mobile 1 whereas it doesn't burn the Castrol not dino oil when I used it .
Ali, Thanks for the oil update. I know that as soon as Mobil announces the specs on their new Mobil 1 EP (15 K mile) oils (5W-30, 10W-30, and 10W-40) you'll be on top of it. Is the 15W-50 you show in the table the "old" formulation or the new EP one? Looks like the old one, but perhaps the new additive package has not changed the viscosities and other data. I'm interested in your opinion on how important the API ratings of SM and SL are now that we can choose between the two. Once again, thank you for your research and informed opinion on this stuff. Cheers, Mark
Two oils of the exact same type and viscosities but different brands behave differently in engines. You have to just try different ones until you find the one that performs the way you want. One causes oil consumption, the other does not. My 575 Maranello used a qt. of 5W-30 Shell Helix Ultra in 500 miles then none with 0W-20 Mobil 1 in 4,000 miles, not a drop. Picking the right viscosity involves experimentation. Read: http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=000427 This will help. I find no change in oil temperatures in the winter in my cars but the results may vary. aehaas
The main difference in SM oils from the SL oils is a decrease in the ZDP friction modifier levels to protect the catalytic converter. There are other, newer additives that we know less about. Some are sticking to the older SL oils. In theory however, the GL-4, SM oils are better overall on the average. I have just gotten the new EP Mobil 1 oil data. It will be a while to get it here but keep checking. aehaas
Well as it turned out I found some time. Here is the Mobil EP oil data: Image Unavailable, Please Login
Using Mobile 1 synth 5-30 in the Euro 308 and i must say, it is spot on so far. Compared to Amsoil 20-50 Series 2k the Mobile 1 runs cooler and seems to allow the engine to rev better. The oil pressure with the Mobile is spot on ALL the time except a tad lower pressure than Amsoil during idling onces warmed up. Was in stop/go traffic today after 125 miles of driving and the temps did rise of course, though were less than 1/2 gauge and was fine. So... the 5-30 Mobile synth operates cooler in ALL aspects. As for oil consumption, only have 700 miles on the Mobile and so far looks like zero consumption.
Thanks for posting. Can you explain the different consumption patterns of similar weight/viscosity oils? Philip
Anyone know anything about the new 0w-40 Shell Rotella T synthetic? I can find nothing on a google search...only the previous 5w-40 version.
I believe it was a characteristic of a boxer/flat engine. Someone very reputable had explain the reasons behind it to me before, but for the love of god I can not remember why at this time.
I hate to ask a stupid question in such a "scientific" thread but can you mix different viscosities of the same oil to acheve a "more" suitable blend for your car? Also, I was told that I shouldn't use a synthenic oil in my 79 308 even when Ferrari recommends a synthenic. Suppose to be hard on the seals and gaskets and increases leaking.
At the time, the local auto stores did not have 0W-x so 5W-30 was close enough. Actually the oil was going to only be for very brief winter drives (500 miles total) and i was going to remove it this spring. Decided it was best to store the car for the winter. The Mobile 1 5W-30 synth works so well decided to do let it be for the full 3,000 miles. Next change may well be 0W-40. All i CAN say is: Amsoil 20-50 took forever to warm up and 5W-30 is faster. Upon start up the oil pressure gauge took about 3 to 4 seconds with Amsoil (with Baldwin filter) or 2 to 3 seconds with UFI filter. Mobile 1 5W-30 with Baldwin filter oil pressure is nearly instantaneous. Amsoil temps would eventually climb to 90C (or 100C on hot days and/or stop/go traffic) while Mobile 1 5W-30 reaches only 80C (climbing to 90C for hot day and stop/go traffic). Engine seems to be a touch faster to rev with Mobile 1 5W-30 versus Amsoil 20W-50 Series 2000. Sorry for being longwinded, yet wanted to post detailed data for those who may eventaully read this thread days/week/months/years from now. In a way i kinda use Fchat as a way to backup my data.
To echo some of Steven's findings, I changed to Mobil 1 0W30 in my Diablo for a year now. Lower oil temp, usually 80C down from 90C, Instantaneous oil pressure on startup. BTW, Steven, How's life on the mountain? Mark
Mark, glad you are experiencing same results. In fact it is YOUR FAULT i got the new suspension after a ride in your Lambo during Dyno Day!!! Many thanks Life here is good. The place is quite large (including land) so me and Mr Chainsaw are getting intimate as are me and all my tools. The place is great and all, yet the P.O. had many 1/2 jobs and i need to remove or fix/finish them. Add to that a few other things. My lovely lady wanted new shelving in both her closets... Still, amazing view, great times and the hot tub is nice and warm... and have made enough 'extra room' on the lower lawn to park 12 more exotic cars for a party event Nothing better than the amazing gal and i, the hot tub, aged cigar, espresso/cappuccino... and this incredible view!
