Hey guys, I've been on here long enough so that you should know I'm not a spammer. Things are pretty darn hot out there and I'm hearing a LOT of people *****ing about how miserably warm/hot their homes are...or how high their A/C bills will be. People often come into my home and ask how/why it's so cool without the A/C running...so here's my "secret"..... There are a lot of little secrets & tips that many homeowners are not aware of. Most people I know/meet tell me they have "plenty" of insulation in their attic...and then they go on to explain how it's a foot thick, yada yada yada....typically, they have hardly anything and were just plain/simple unaware of it. Attic insulation is such a blind item. Go up into your attic, you don't have to crawl up there or get dirty....just take a flashlight and make sure you have about 10" of good insluation laying on the floor of your attic. That's all I'm suggesting. You'll also want to make sure you attic is well ventillated to get the heat out....today's asphalt-composition shingle roofs are a crapload hotter then the old wood shingle/shake roofs of yester-year. When you have solid insulation, it's like putting your home under a huge cloud for shade. It works both summer & winter, usually pays for itself in less then a year and makes a HUGE difference in the comfort of a home. Plus, the Southern California Gas Company has a rebate program available too!!!! Answer these simple questions: Would you drive your car if you knew the gas tank was leaking? Would you buy a refrigerator that had no door on it? Would you leave all your windows wide open while you run the heat in winter? Would you prefer to stand in the sun or the shade when it's 110-degrees out? Would you continue to date a girl if she didn't put out? yeah yeah yeah...make your jokes, but my home is 6,500 sq/ft and I'm living in the miserable San Fernando Valley where it's hot. I keep my home about 74-degrees and my electric bill during summer is about $270...and that's every 2 months!!!! Who's cool now daddy-o? Old insulation settles & packs, plus...old stuff was installed years ago when we had much lower building-code requirements. If your home is older then 25 years....it probably needs some. Lemme know if you have any quesitons. AND....in conclusion: I don't want your business. One of my policies is not to make profit off friends, and a few people here can attest to that...so there's nothing in it for me to insulate your home. I'm honestly just tipping ya off as to where most your heat is entering your home in the summer or escaping in the winter. Call it a public service announcement. And now, I'm sure...the inevitable jokes
Steve, yes, I'm roasting hot. if you pay $270 for electricity every two months (and keep your home at 74 deg) you're a insulation STUD ! i pay about $150 per month and it's 85 deg in here !
I'd love to (and yes, I'm roasting as I type this) however I believe that I need to find a pigmy first... There's about 12" of clearance through the entire width of the top story (about 70 feet). It's a good 30 degrees warmer up there too boot. Any ideas, or am I going to get covered in sheetrock dust just thinking about it? C. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
No...I just know how to tinker with my electric meter JUST KIDDING. To be very accurate about it...my home is SUPER-INSULATED...the attic is very ventillated and insulated like homes in extreme climates, the walls are done, the windows low-e, the house painted white, etc, etc. But yes, my bills for A/C & heating are absurdly low....it's sorta my way of giving back to the environment what my Hummer takes away from it. Chris/CMY....you simply have what we, in the industry, refer to as a "low-crawl". Believe it or not....it's no problem. Using blown insulation you not only get a continous blanket of coverage, you can also blow the material some 30' if need be. Your home can be done, no problem. You'll want to use a cellulose blown insulation....stay the F away from fiberglass!!!! Cellulose is safer, longer-lasting, more effective and denser: the denser nature allows the material to be blown further then the lighter/fluffier fiberglass. Thanks for the pic's.....brings back memories of old days labor. What is that other stuff up there? Almost looks like a double-attic????
Cute... Just add 1500 sq/ft. 8000 qualifies as "Adorable" Keep this in mind captain adventure......10,000 is FAAAAAAAbulous!
Leaving today (Thursday) to do the Lake Arrowhead thing over the weekend. Any of you guys wanna make a day run to visit us?....I'll throw in a boat ride, cigars & beer...maybe even some time at the rifle-range!! Image Unavailable, Please Login
