One thing to keep in mind is that the MSRP and what dealers "discount" their cars in the showrooms are usually $10K apart. You could easily walk out with a new loaded Maser. for about $80-85K.

They seem to depreciate just like every other used car. In a year or two I would think that $50k would easily buy a 2002 example with 20,000 miles. If Maserati were to pull out of the US market, however, initial depreciation would increase dramatically.

I don't see the Coupes and Spyders going down to pitiful Biturbo $4000 levels, ever. Far too nice a car, enthusiast support in 10 years will form a bottom in the $13-20k range IMO. Not unlike a BMW 850 or M-B SL500 from the 90's.

One last thing, standards will be worth a premium over the F1. At least to me...

Now you're making stuff up. Not one report has suggested this.

BTW, I love my GranSport... regardless of its depreciation!

I know of a 2003 coupe with 15,000 miles, 6 speed manual asking $54k for it. Supposed to be in great condition. What do you think?

It's not a bad car for the price. 360 technology, front engine, luxurious interior , etc.. The only thing I'm not fond of the rear end. It reminds me of a mid 90's Honda Prelude.

Here are the latest manheim auction reports for 2002 Spiders:

    09/28/05 W PALM Regular $53,400 7,378 Avg ELLOW 8G A Yes
    09/08/05 MANHEIM Lease $52,000 5,112 Avg MAROON 8G A Yes
    08/25/05 MANHEIM Regular $45,500 19,851 Below YELLOW 8G 6 No
    08/23/05 FAAO Regular $51,500 15,673 Avg BLUE/GRY 8G A Yes
    08/18/05 RIVRSIDE Regular $57,000 7,692 Above SLVR 8G M Yes
    07/21/05 RIVRSIDE Lease $46,500 12,258 Below GREY 8G A No

(These numbers are a little strong becuase the Manheim cars always bring more money then regular local auctions.)

Remember most people who purchased the 02's didn't pay sticker or anywhere near it. Consider that the intial Maserati intro in 2002 was a complete failure and that most dealers still had 02's well into 03. After the first year I was told that Ferrari fired all the Maserati NA execs and started from scratch with a lower production and basically relaunched the cars. Shelton ferrari/maserati was advertising spiders for $900 per month, loaded, brand new with no money down in the summer of 03. I know several people that purchased 02 spiders from the collection loaded in the 70's, keeping in mind most of these cars had almost $100k stickers. With that in mind is it bad for a three year old car that was purchased in the $70's to be worth somewhere in the high 40's low 50's? I don't think its that bad, unless you paid almost $100k for the car!

Because of the uncertain depreciation and very small resale market, my recommendation to anyone interested in the car would be to lease a new one from a dealership, which goes through Chase, which I suspect has notably favorable lease/residual valua terms supported by Ferrari or Fiat: this to encourage the cars into the American market.

Get the car on up to a 4-year closed-end lease, and don't put more than 50K miles on it; thus you also keep it happily under factory warranty. Best of all worlds. :)

I wonder if the reasons why Spyders seem to do worse is:
    1. There are more of them (what the ratio is exactly I do not know, 2/1 perhaps?)
    2. 2002 Spyders had a reputation for cowl shake.
    3. The Coupe is a more practical car, maybe more potential buyers can rationalize a 2+2 purchase over a 2-seat roadster.

After recently looking at everything from a Pontiac GTO (feels cheap), to a Porsche 911 (too cramped for 4), to a M-B CL500 (too big), it seems that for the money the Maserati Coupe offers a nice mix of practicality, performance, exclusivity, and at these prices and below...value.

So what will happen to prices as the early cars start to come off of warranty? My guess is that there will be an even greater difference between those with warranty and those without, perhaps a couple of thousand dollars, perhaps more.

The $13-20k number I mention for 2014 prices would be for a sound, original car without major issues and perhaps 60,000 miles. In other words, and old used car with less than half its life left. Creampuffs and garage queens might get into the $40k's at that time. Gransports a little more.

I didn't claim it to be fact, but you never know. It could be decided tomorrow that the small sales numbers here simply do not justify the red tape to sell cars in the US. The 3200GT was that way of course.

If they have limited production capacity and the cars prove to be very popular other places in the world, why fail to satisfy that demand while at the same time having to give discounts to move them in the US?

Yea and you could be a troll.

And no it wasn't like that with the 3200GT. That was because the 3200GT needed too much work to pass US regulations; emissions, crash testing etc. and because there was no dealer network in place.
