While I've got my OEM muffler and cats off the car and on the floor, it's occurred to me that I *really* don't want to R&R this piece any more than I have to. An aftermarket muffler was in the plans for the future, but now that I've got the OEM one off, I'm beginning to wonder about just doing it now.

So far - I've found only a few options. I'm interested to hear what FChatters have on their cars and where they purchased them. If you want to tell your price, that's fine, but just pointing me in the right direction to find one on my own will be enough for me, honestly - current prices are all that are relavent, anyway.

    So far, I've found:

Tubi - the obvious frontrunner in name recognition for Ferrari, but I'm not sure which one I would need. Their website (www.tubistyleusa.com) doesn't *explicitly* list a system for a '79 308GT4, though they do for a 78-79 308. I'm assuming it's the same...? P/N 01097811000 At any rate, I saw the price quoted on Carobu's website (http://www.carobu.com/html/exhaust_-_ferrari.html) is nearly $2800 - more than 10% of what I paid for the car! Me thinks that's just a *wee* bit too expensive for an exhuast on this ol' driver...

Stebro - They seem to have one for $1325, but again, I'm not sure if it will fit my 2-cat, '79 car... Website is a bit funky, too... I click on a picture of the exhuast to enlarge the pic, and it loads a completely different catalogue. Hmmm... (http://www.carobu.com/html/exhaust_-_ferrari.html)

Ansa - Doesn't have as much "bling" as the Tubi, but I really don't care. If the price is right, the fitment is good, and it'll work on my car, that's all I care about. Only problem is, I can't seem to find any websites with prices...

I also checked out Nick's Forza Ferrari for 308 exhuasts, but his site only has pics...no brand/model names, prices, etc. Anybody have one of these?

Then there's the "custom D-I-Y" job, with the help of a muffler shop, but I'm not sure I want to go that route. I'm sure it's more cost-effective, but without knowing what it will sound like ahead of time, and without knowing what possible untoward effects it might have on driveability (true-dual system, no crossover pipe, etc.), I'm not sure I even want to risk it.

Thanks so much (*again*), and I'll look forward to your responses!

    Aaron

PS - I DID search...extensively...and came up with squat, except for one guy here in CA who has a Tubi on his GT4. That was it...

my gt4 is a '75 so i assume no cats are needed [none there]...when i got the car it had a seemingly "professional" system with dual glaspak mufflers and chrome dual angle-cut tips...no names, numbers or markings..it's loud but makes the car sound a bit like a v8 chevy pickup...i'm interested to see [and perhaps hear] what you come up with...my system works well and i assume has a minimum of restriction but i'd like to raise the sound a few octaves..less a barbershop quartet bass and more an italian tenor.

I'm interested as well. I'd like to remove the "diaper" muffler guard and would like to have a nice stainless system showing in it's place. My "78 qualifies as an antique car here in TN and needs no cats...

I have the stebro on my car. Sounds really good.

Some people have reported problems getting their stebro (search and you will find some stories). Only problem I've had is burning out an exhaust gasket. Other than that, very happy with my purchase.

Burning out a gasket? Are you talking about one of the "donuts" that go in between the flanges of the cats and the rest of the exhuast? I could see burning one of those up quite easily... Mine are ~500 miles old (basically, 3 weeks) and look like they came from the factory.

yep, that's what I meant (although I don't have a catalytic converter, since my car is a 75)

I still have the stock exhaust on my 74 308 GT4.
It's still solid and has no leaks. But it sure is loud
compared to the newer exhaust systems.
I was at CC many months ago and was told that
the factory used Ansa exhausts back in the mid 70's.
(if that is correct), I would opt for the OEM or as clost to
OEM when I have to replace mine.

You do have to be a little careful when discussing the ANSA-brand F silencers because they come in either steel (less expensive) or stainless steel (more expensive) construction, and they can be something that replaces the silencer only or the silencer+cats -- here's a shot of steel ANSA for a '78-'79 US 308GTB/S that replaces the silencer+cats versus the stock system:

Hmmm... Well, in California, I would definitely need a setup that would accomodate cats. Re: the picture on the left, compare the long pipe that would go towards the front bank manifold to the picture on the right. The one on the R is OEM, and has many bends in that long piece. I was just under my car, and those bends are there for a reason! I don't see how the straight piece would even fit, as it's got "stuff" to bend around/over/etc...

The long pipe appearing "straight" is just from the angle of that photo. Since the ANSA doesn't have the thermal insulation, the outer diameter of the long pipe is smaller so the bend doesn't have to be so severe to clear the rear axle -- here's a slightly different photo angle better showing the bend:

Give me a shout, or shoot me an e mail at [email protected]
I can accomidate you with a system as I sell many brands & know the diffrences in build quality, sound , pricing etc. I can send you some pics of diffrent gt4 systems avail at diffrent prices. Here is an example of a Euro style GT4 system from Mille Miglia in a classic look & sound profile.

I still have the stock thermal reactor on my 75 GT4, which isn't leaking, so for now I'm leaving it on. I disconnected my air pumps, so the exhaust should not be nearly as hot as when they're working. In Calif, a 75 does not need a smog check.

I bought a Stebro (non cat) system for my car but will not install it til I have to. The quality looks very good, though I obviously haven't checked the fit yet. It was retail about $1300, but after my initial inquiry and following silence, Stebro contacted me about an "end of month" deal for $1000 I guess to make their sales quota, including shipping to Calif from Canada. No idea if they might offer that to anyone else.

Aaron, you're welcome to take a look if we get together.

    Nick -
Thanks for the reply. It's always great to hear directly from a vendor on the forum. For now, I went ahead and just reinstalled the OEM muffler, but I'll definitely be calling you when the time comes to go aftermarket. Thanks so much.

    Andrew -
I'd love to see the Stebro in the flesh... It *should* be slightly different than a system that would fit a 78-79 2-cat car, but it'll be nice to see the fit and finish up close. A local member, "blu328gts" has a Stebro on his 328, and IMO it sounds *killer*. Apples and oranges compared to a carb'd 308 motor, but if it's any indication how the general sound would be, I definitely like it.

    Take care -
    Aaron

Last spring I did a custom set-up with some magnaflows. It's a true dual set up.

I drove it quite a bit last summer and was very happy with the sound and there was no change in drivability. It's louder and more throaty than the previous set up but that's fine with me.

Cost effective, yes. Abomination in some eyes, yes. Others have gone this route as well and been happy. It's been done and is an option.

    Do a search

    308 exhaust
    custom exhaust
    magnaflow mufflers
    flowmaste

there's some good info here, I just don't recall on how to find it.

    Good luck.

Also with carbs youre going to have to re-jet if you go with something a lot less restrictive.
