I took my car to the dealer for the annual service. I had complained about the car lurching in first gear and he told me that he hooked it up and I had 73% clutch wear and said it should probably be replaced and upgraded at the same time to solve the lurching. He quoted me $8K, which I know is high but they replace the TCU to 04 specs and use the Challenge flywheel/pressure plate/disc. I asked if he could install a Challenge TCU, and he said no. BTW, the car has 8500 miles. I have two questions for the community:

    1. Is the f1 pump/trans different on a CS and can I upgrade the clutch system to CS specs?

    2. Should I wait and get a few more thousand miles out of the current clutch? It isn't slipping or anything, and I can deal with the lurching for a few more months.

I know the dealer should answer these questions but I'm not trusting either of the two dealers I've been to so far. When I had my car PPI'd I was told that the F1 fluid should probably be changed as it had some slight shavings in it. I was also told that I may have an exhaust manifold leak as there was some blueing on the heat shield.

When I had dealer #2 check both these problems they said my f1 fluid was fine and the exhaust manifold looked fine as well. You can understand my apprehension at this point.

I live in the Los Angeles area and if there are any dealer/mechanic recommendations I would be most grateful.

    Thanks In Advance!!

First keep in mind that there is a difference between a 360 Challenge and a Challenge Stradale one is a race car and one is a street legal race car.

You can use a CS TCU in your 360, I have done this so I know it works and it is worth it!
You should "upgrade" to the 6 bolt ring gear.
The clutch and flywheel on the CS is the same one found in a 04 360 (normal factory improvement of part)
Shavings in the fluid??? I'd be worried as a hydraulic system with shavings in is BAD period!
The bluing of the heat shield is more than likely from contact with the manifold and not a leak.
Brian Crall (rifledriver) is in Cali. not sure if he is in la or not I've heard very good things about him.
As far as when to replace, just remember they don't get better on their own.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Duskybird. It helps a great deal. If I'm going to spend the money, I might as well get it right.

Damien at Fusion (in LA) has suggested a clutch upgrade on my '99 360. We haven't gotten into specifics, but it was much less $$ than what you are talking about. His reputation and my personal experience have shown him to be a stand up guy. PM me if you want his number. Where ever you do it, I would love to hear your impressions of the upgrade.
