Thank you for taking care of these cars
How did you get the cases looking so good? Did you bead blast them? If so, with what? I've had good luck with pecan shells. Thx, Dale
Wow, I'm even more than ordinarily impressed. I've done some work on Triumph motorcycles from the 50s and getting them this clean was impossible without blasting. Dale ps One more question, if you don't mind. Where those cases originally cad plated or something? They sure look nice.
Nope. Just lightly painted with a paint mixed with ground ceramic. It's a special brew Sal mixes up and then sprays on. The bolts are blackened by a special brew as well.
Great stuff. I know that some will think that this is crazy, but that safety wiring is art. Sal deserves an Oscar just for that! Thx, Dale
Just one more question (doing my best Columbo imitation), what is the purpose of the two small grates? Was this an early attempt at cooling? If you have some pics of the gears and whatnot, I'd love to see em. I can stare at this stuff all night long. To me this is porn. I guess what I like about the old stuff is that even a non-gear head like me can look at it and figure this stuff out. Thanks again, for the hundredth time. Dale
And just one more thing Is this car a left hand shifter? I should know after seeing it in person, but I can't remember. I'm guessing yes because it looks like the clutch pedal extension is coming out the right side. Dale
Jim I just read through this thread and all i can say is you're the f-ing man! im really pissed about missing the dinner! was great meeting you nonetheless and looking forward to the spring run to the shop
Thanks! Dale Yes shifter is in center thus left hand as rt hand drive. Earlier in thread is a shot of gears. Grates are for cooling. Pictures of fuel tank we're building to fit cell into and MM nose to follow. Best
Thanks. I had forgotten about the earlier pics. That was way back in January! Again, forgive me for dumb questions, is this a dry or wet clutch? Dale
Depends if seals leak or not. New Fuel Tank Under Construction for Fuel Cell. MM Nose. Jim, Beautiful work by your craftsman ... just one question is that a 250 SWB in the background in the second photo (http://ferrarichat.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=136791&stc=1)? I guess the fuel cell means that the new tank must have some sort of removable panel to get it in and out ... anyway very, very impressed. Pete
Well, ask a dumb question... Can I assume then that the vents/grates on the bell housing are outside the actual clutch? Dale ps Are the clutch plates cork?
Hi SWB is a friends. We'll leave Flip filer cap for show and have proper cap inside neck. At Fuel line PU point we'll have an access panel but it will be hidden. Dale Yes I think you need a little Vintage in your life. Best
I know, I know. Im just an analog guy living in a digital world. I just brought a new home, and it is driving me crazy. I just want to set the temperature for 68 degrees. The damn thermoset will do everything else but that. I could probably nuke half of the USSR if I could understand the directions. (Heavy sigh.) Perhaps this is why I like the vintage stuff so much. Even though Im more of a poet than an engineer (and Im actually not much of either), I can look at this stuff and figure out how it works. Lets see. You push in this lever, which moves those dog ears, that moves the gears, which shifts the car. Great stuff, Jim. For the time being, Ill just have to live vicariously through you. I already have too many projects going with just living and dying. Indeed, I have a Brit bike project that has been gathering dust for, well, lets just say way too long. So if you dont mind, Ill just bug you with dumb questions from time to time. Meantime, please keep those postcards coming. Thanks for sharing, Dale
wonderfull thing to be able to follow this restauration! thank you for sharing. btw: do you work yourself on the cars, or do you guide the project and let the mechanics do the work itself? just being curious...
