Japan has always been that black hole that when a car goes there it never comes back so it is news when one manages to escape. Such is the case with this 246 GT that is currently on its way back to the US for sale through Symbolic Motors in La Jolla.

    Here is the inside scoop:

    1972 Dino 246GT, s/n 02898
Normal Production USA (North American Market) Left-Hand-Drive
Normal Cromadora wheels with optional power windows (no AC)
Originally Yellow with Black Vinyl interior. Now Red with Black interior (please see post below for correction to this info)

1972-1979 Imported by Luigi Chinetti for first USA owner

1979 FAF Motor Cars Tucker, Georgia

1979-1982 Purchased by Ward W. Orndoff of Jupiter Island, Florida (now red w/ black Florida Plates "ZAB 836" mileage in 1979 rs 36,300 miles.

1982 Purchased back by FAF and now showing 44,800 miles. Offered for public sale for $20,995.

1983 Purchased by Nick Wilson of Amarillo, Texas for $20,995.

1983-1989 Purchased by George Golden a resident of Colorado. at time of sale in 1989, car reported to have 48,000 original miles.

1989-1990 Purchased by Richard "Dick" Johnson a Colorado resident. He offered the car for sale in September of 1990.

1990 Purchased by SUZUSHO Co., Ltd in Nagoya, Japan in September of 1990 and immediately advertised for sale.

Feb 2012 Still in Japan with original Japanese owner and now with 51,000 original miles.

I am really dragging my feet a bit on a quick sale on this one as I am desperate to dig out all my old 8-Track tapes and have some fun if the car comes back to the States.

Have to get some video and post it to you tube if the player still works. Anyone up for a La Jolla cruise with REO Speedwagon for background noise?

    Ciao,

    Bill

I would rather have am 8 Track on car like this rather than an iPod connection.

Clearly, the iPod is more user friendly.

I can't tell you how much fun I have had "Tuning" a Becker radio for a young person that doesn't understand the unique touch it requires to get the best sound.

And raising and lowering the "Antenna".... "What's that thing that makes the radio work or not?" :)

I have gotten a ton more updates on the car's history from all over the planet. This site is cracking good at getting lost details on the magnificent little machines.

You people and your ability to find the most obscure details deserve massive credit for helping me out so much... I really do not know how to thank you all.

I am in Palm Springs all weekend for the Desert Classic Tour/Rally and Concours but back on Monday. I will try to post a comprehensive history of the car when I return.

The car was never color changed and always red with black. The interior is believed to be original and the 51,000 miles no supported at each moment of the car's life from new.

    Ciao,

My 2840 was 29 cars earlier on the assembly line, if I'm not mistaken.
It does not have those vents dash vents.
And someone must have filled in the DOT side marker lights and put Euro lights in the front.

The USA type markers were removed and the Euro ones fitted after being sold and imported to Japan.

    Cheers,

    Bill

I realize this is an old thread, but as a previous owner of this Dino, just wondering what happened to it. Last time I researched it, it was still in Japan. As far as the original color of the car, I found yellow colored paint on the underside of some panels, namely the back trunk lid, so I always suspected that yellow was the original color and it was painted the typical Ferrari Red.

I had about a 7 year ownership of the car and only put about 6000 miles on it. Mostly on short trips into the mountains of Colorado. It was a pleasure to drive. I always felt it was a bit underpowered until I found the source of the problem when I had the air filter removed. At full throttle, the carb butterflies were only opening to an angle of about 70 degrees instead of 90 degrees. A quick adjustment of the throttle linkage solved that problem. It made a huge difference in performance - more like I expected.

I bought the car for about $22K from Nick Wilson in Amarillo Texas, and drove it back to Colorado. I arrived in Amarillo just after an ice storm so I let him take me for a drive. I was immediately sold. I think he was very sad to see it go. I sold it for $48K (unfortunately just before Enzo Ferrari died and prices shot up). It was a great experience.
