Hi Tom, I am amazed you got the car from Joe Harth. I was twice at his place in Caracas a dozen years ago and I know of a lot of deals he screwed up. Ed Watermann sued him about a BMW 507. BTW: Nice feature about your 250 Europa in Thoroughbred and Classic Cars. Regards wolfi
Tom. Nice! Was this a "barn", or more of an "open field" find? How about some regular (or irregular) updates on your progress on the car in this thread? This one's a keeper, right? Dave M.
The scene unfolds: To fix this car Tom will have to buy the parts from himself....."Oh the humanity, the humanity...." Michael Bayer 330GT #9727 & 365GTC/4 #14947
Taking off the dust from this for year old thread... Would be nice to hear if there are any new updates on this specific alloy Boano? JR
This was a literal jungle find complete with snakes residing inside when it was dragged out. Evidently, this is not as unusual as one may think. Ferraris were sold in Venezuela but if anything went wrong with them there were no spare parts and even if there were, no one around qualified to install them. So, this Boano and a 275 GTB/4 (with only four missing parts, yeah right!) ended up in Harth's garage for years. The cancer grows, couldn't happen to three nicer guys. RM
Good thread. Wondering how the project has progressed... Meanwhile, was poking around the web for a little more info on the Boano cars, and found this interesting story. The "Pope of Ferraris" is a major player here. http://www.quattrofino.com/boanostory.htm
I have tried to atttach a photo of alloy Boano chassis # 0529 GT as it currently is today. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hey Tom, I saw your 375mm (the one in your profile) a few years ago at Tempe Diablo Stadium. Now one of my favorite Ferraris. I know this is off topic but what the heck.
Well Jim thanks for posting. Looks like you're in the first stages of restoration for 0529GT. I think everyone would love to see more images.
Hey Jim, Love the "lump" you have for a motor(matching numbers of course!) Boano's and especially alloy ones are a real treat. I'm sure it will be lovely when completed. Regards, Mike
Peter - enclosed find 2 more photos from the start in July 2007. Your 308 GT4 in Black/Burgundy is Stunning ! Staceman - 2 more photos from the start in July 2007. Mike - I still remember your Beautiful Lusso from Cavallino 2006 ! Everything about that car was Perfect !!! Steve M. would have been proud !!! When the Boano is done, I will be the lucky "lump" driving it. Mike, thanks to you and ferrari4evr1 for the kind words of encouragement !!! Your'e welcome Jim! Thankyou for the compliments on the Lusso, I have no doubt 0529 will look spectacular, and I know you will derive much satisfaction from a restoration of this magnitude, as you should! I look forward to the day it is completed! Regards, Mike
Amazing! When I first made comments in this thread after Tom posted photos, I figured there could be alot of corrosion between the aluminum body and steel structure. How much of either were you able to save? Thanks for the compliments. That it's original colours. Leather upholstery is original too!
Staceman - The photo in post #61 is essentially where we are at today with the vehicle. However, we have already gone through the rear-end, the transmission, the suspension at all four corners and the complete wiring harness. Yet "to do"; paint the car ( I would like to do it in the blue color as shown in the pictures when it was in Venezuela ), assemble the engine and then assemble the car. Still quite a bit left. I had to "park" the project for a little while due to the economy and the acquisition of another car. But it is nice knowing that we have the car and we will bring it back and let it sing its Great Song again.
Steve - we did have to repair some of the metal in the uprights for the front cowl. We also repaired the rocker panels. The frames on these older Ferrari's are amazing ! The quality of steel and the quality of construction is incredible ! This frame was solid from front to back and straight as well as square from corner to corner, with perfect diagonals and perfectly level. The car as you see it in post #61 has all of the original aluminum body panels to include the back clip, the rear bonnet, the doors, the roof, the front clip and the front bonnet. We did have to repair some of the aluminum around the rear wheel openings and around the front grill opening. It is a treat to see these old aluminum bodies in the "raw" with all the many hammer marks as they shaped the body. It almost seems a shame to paint them and cover up all the metal art work ! I remember seeing #9057 in the "raw" aluminum at Cavallino a few years back and marvelled at how many times the metal crafters had to tap the aluminum to shape that beautiful body ! I am somewhat happy I had to put the project on hold for awhile so that I have more time to enjoy it in its' "raw" stage. My "thanks" to everyone for their interest in this project ! Ciao !
Jim, Thanks for the updates, comments and photos. It's great to see the work going into the car. Kris
Peter - I mistakenly entered "Steve" on my last post. I meant to address you. Sorry ! Here is a photo of the transmission for 0529GT. Image Unavailable, Please Login
