My folks own an 07 quattroporte but live out of state. I need some assistance in trying to determine the reason for the engine control system warning light to be triggered. The car is running normal and apparently there are no starting problems.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

It could be anything really. The CEL could come on even for a failed turn signal bulb, it could be anything around the car (engine, electronics, sensors, you name it).

You have to hook it up to an OBD reader and get an error code, then we can see the description that corresponds to that error code and we can tell you what it is all about.

You can either use a generic OBDII reader or go to the dealer (or independent Maserati shop) and ask them to do it for you.

    PS:
The QP and the GT may even give you some hits via the LCD screen, but not always.

Thanks for the info. I asked them when the last time she got gas? It was the same day. I had her check the gas gap which turned out to be loose. We will see if it resets itself and if not I have advised her to pick up an OBDII reader and I would walk them through the check process.

I was thrown off by their message "engine control system warning" instead of check engine.

The gas cap has a sensor for leaving fumes, so if not properly shut it will cause a CEL.

Yes the messages aren't very "pretty". Probably a bad translation from Italian.

At first the OBD system was for engine management only and controlled various engine sensors, eventually people thought it would be a great idea to pile up every electronic component with the CEL but never bothered to change the name to something more generic.

There is also another funny message: GO TO THE DEALER... not sure what they were thinking... heh

Thought I would put an end to this thread with an update.

It turns out it was the loose gas cap. Three cold starts and the light reset. All is well.

    Thanks for the info.
