I have an 08 430 spider with about 3500 miles on it. just lately I'm noticing that on cold startup, when I engage the F1 and pull away I'm getting loud popping noises, first I thought maybe was exhaust related, but this morning (texas, 55 degrees out) I had left the car outside, when to start and pull away and it made the same noises, dropped into neutral. engaged again, same noises, dropped to neutral. engaged reverse, was able to pull it into the garage, turned it off.

    thoughts, ideas?

Goodness - an 08 w only 3500 miles? Maybe it just needs to be driven a little more :) I've had a bit of rough starting in <60 degree days, might want to let it warm up for a bit and see if it changes/ alleviates?

Bought it last year with 1100 miles on it, super clean. The popping/cracking almost sounds like the e brake binding up but its not

You guys and your barely driven cars...

A popping noise.. I'd be thinking a bad coil, bad plugs (unburnt fuel detonating in the exhaust as a pop) if its when the engine is running. Or if only when driven perhaps a CV joint that is binding. I'm not even going to get into drivetrain...

man, catching heat about not driving. I work exactly 2.3 miles from where I live, job is 10-7, usually come home for lunch. that's 9.2 miles 5 days a week. divide that by 6 cars and a motorcycle.

2500 miles since I took ownership last september, miles seem about right.

it's not an on idle or even on rev noise, it is specifically when moving away slowly, cold engine. today was the first time it forced the car back to neutral, twice.

edit: CV joint is a possibility.

Hmmm.. any transmission lights or check engine lights popping on?

Might be time to get it scanned with an SD3 to find out WHY the car bumped it into neutral.

Would be interested to know what it is too. Good luck!

As for the mileage you're right.... Most F car owners own multiple cars and the majority of them don't use the F cars as main transportation or even regular weekend cars....

I know a guy who has 30 cars and 10 bikes and lives 10 miles from his office. If he puts 5-600 miles per year on each car will be an achievement :):)

Okay. This am I rolled it in neutral from the garage no popping so cv is probably fine. I then started and let it warm up for about five minutes then drove it. No noises. My guess is that the f1 system wasn't fully priming but I will play more

    Be careful grasshopper.

Noises that bump car into neutral can balloon into big thing.

Only way to see into mind of dragon is with SD3.

    Best wishes. :)

Possible sticking throw out bearing. If you get the clutch fully engaged, do you still have the noise?

It's not uncommon for the differential to make noises when cold, particularly reversing when cold, particularly reversing with a certain amount of lock on the front wheels. Most refer to it as "chatter" and not popping but maybe this is part of what you are hearing.

As others have said, the dropping in to neutral is indicative of some other problem in the F1/clutch area. Perhaps wear of clutch, perhaps other settings out of whack.

Ferrari has a serious warm up procedure, better follow that. Jumping in and launching have caused problems before, check threads.

It may be more than most people would wait for, but it is Ferrari

i now nose in the car to the garage rather than back in, so I can warm it up without flooding the garage with fumes.

problem hasn't resurfaced, but i will still get it into the dealership probably next week (no loaner cars and it being 30 miles away sucks) to have them put it on the computer.
