Back to LA today for more plating. All the engine bits and pieces. Then to Philipi's French Dip's, an LA land mark that has been there since 1908!! Next stop was North Hollwood Speedometer, I have sent Dino gauges there for years but had never been to the place. They have been in the same spot for 50 years. A real treat as I got a tour and met the man who will be working on Rob's gauges. They had thousands of parts and gauges spread out everywhere. Instruments are sent to them from around the world for repair and restoration. Rob's car finally is done being media blasted and was cleaned and now in the booth ready for a coat of self etching primer before it goes to Steve on Monday. With it totally clean the areas with cancer can now be seen and cut out. The beat goes on!

Beutiful work!!! I think it's fair to say that the car will be miles better than when it left the factory in 74!

Great work with the car and lovely food places, next stop should be Pink's HotDog's. Glad I've eaten just before I've ran into those pic's of burgers and sandwiches.

Finally the media blasting is done and the metal etching primer is on. The blasting took forever to blast 3 paint jobs off. The Dino was delivered to Steve K. yesterday to begin on paint and body. In the meantime Christain from Cavallo is rebuilding the motor. He was trained at the Ferrari Factory and is well into the rebuild. More parts plating for the engine.

As you can tell most of the tubing was damage then poorly repaired that carries the lines and cables through the chassis. Know all cut out and repaired like factory. We even try to duplicate the welds..... that's the easy part. This would of never been found if Jon G would of not pulled the car apart like he did. The first segment of repairs finished and off to a great start.

Alberto, that is so true. I think you said once, "Why whiten your teeth over cavities?" Sometimes we in the trade are stuck between a rock and a hard spot. Sometimes the client can't afford a full rotisserie restoration but nevertheless expect good quality results on the restoration for which they've budgeted. How about the person who just wants to flip it for $$$?

Generally speaking, the quality on any restoration is driven by the client's budget but a craftsman's reputation is on the line for the work they do regardless of the extent of the restoration. Sometimes a client's budget doesn't allow for rotisserie job or even allow for repair of hidden damage or metal work revealed through the restoration process. It kills me because my jobs are my calling cards. That's where it's sometimes smart to just walk away but financially I can't afford to walk away from a restoration job. Regardless of a client's budget, my reputation is on the line.

Maybe this is a good point to bring up on OMG's thread about the "cost of restoration".

    Peace
    Steve

Yes, to a point though, remember these bodies were built and stored outside in the "BAD" Weather in Bare Metal. Yes buying a Dino that was delivered to a dry state or maintained in a dry environment can helps a little in a restoration... but these car came with rust all ready germinating with-in when being built. You are doomed from the get go. The good news is its all reparable but at a big cost.

Steve, you are right on all counts. I was more referring to the Dino effort, not your 'average' client, that may not be as picky, and does not necessarily require full restorations.
And again, you are very right about the fact that Dino was born rusted, so no matter what or where, it will always be so.

I remember a friend saying that Italian cars or anything made by Karmann (BMW), should be washed the least possible...

    Regards, Alberto

I'll have to look in past invoices. I came across it several years ago from where I know not right now. There are only 2 rubber seals to replace.
