Ferrari says #24 is 0858 NOT 0856. The original Le Mans Scrutinising Documents I have show the opposite and list the engine # and chassis # of the 24 car as being 0856. I showed these documents to Ferrari. They shrugged and continue to state that the # 24 at Le Mans in 1967 was 0858.
That is quite interesting Jim! The scrutineering data probably shows the #21 car as 0858 and Ferrari than has to insist that that is 0856. Allthough I wouldn't put it past Ferrari to say two 0858's took part in that race. Thanks for your insights Jim.
If Koni is to be believed no. You have any period color photo's of the shocks? The only ones I could find are inconclusive. Koni was adamant that as manufactured and restored by them they were orange but with all things they could be wrong. My Koni Lola shocks were orange when I bought the car in 1971. Was the inside roof of 0850 painted or left aluminum?
Roof not painted what are the model numbers stamped on the shocks? 850 had non-painted shocks. also, shocks obtained from Ferari racing parts stores also unpainted. will find a pic and post later
Seeing as we are on colors...why are exhaust headers painted white? Was it an issue with heat or just to make any leaks easier to spot? CH
The following pics. shocks: original as per 4512P build sheets. note center one has ferrari made top with angle to clear suspension. the end units have stock tops but were not used on the car the suspension pics are 1970 850 unrestored Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
...My desktop now. I swear that's automotive art. How long until she's finished? I suppose you'll have her on the streets as well? _J
Jim, Where and when was this photo of 0844 taken? The reason I ask is that we discussed the gold paint on the outside of your gearbox a while back, and this gearbox appears to be just a casting. Was this gearbox casing made from a less porous material, was it painted silver or was it painted on the inside only? I hope I'm not confusing cars!
The photo of 0844 was taken a few years ago. The importance of the paint is to seal the casting and it has to be put on the inside of the case but the outside of the case doesn't have to be painted. The outside of 0846's was painted gold. Also note 0850's was gold as well. All of these cars were slightly different. The rebuild and stickers were put on by Koni and they said that the shocks were definitely delivered like that but Ferrari could have stripped the paint and machined them a bit. Also some had post Factory racing experience such as 0854 so it could have been modified a bit more. The Fog of time... Image Unavailable, Please Login
I post only a part of the photo for copyright reason. I will send you more by email. It is #24 at Le Mans 67 (for me 0856). Image Unavailable, Please Login
The man in suit on the left is Koni's Henk Richten, instrumental in Koni's racing activities in the 50's-70's.

The photo of 0844 with orange shocks was taken years ago. This photo (Post 767) is of 0846 at Daytona in 1967.
