from waht i understand that is the general rule of thumb. Ive heard this a few times in a few different places. Does this hold true for you? What models does this not work for (more or less). I assume the 4 supercars are probably out of the list. Does this hold true for 456/550/575? still with the 599? or is it mianly the V8s?

Can't speak for the V12's but for any model the cost per mile will be affected more by how much you drive than any other factor. Most people hit maintenance intervals based on time rather than mileage. An owner who drives 5K a year will have far less permile cost than one who drives 1K. I've owned a 328 for 7 years with 17K miles and my maintenance and repair costs are less than 50 cents a mile. Also have a 430 for 39 months and 13K miles. Maintenance has been far less than 50 cents a mile even with a set of tires and brake pads. Repairs were under warranty.

Also if you buy one from the bottom of the barrel expect to pay more over the long run with more head aches and stress.

My ratio has been much higher, but I use my 328 weekends only and probably overmaintain it. Reliability has been excellent.

    1 year in on a 360.

Maintenance? If you include the major service I had done when I bought it, averaged over three years until I need a belt service... (The dealer put new brakes on the car when I bought it, and the clutch has plenty of life left, it was replaced at 10K miles by the prior owner.)

    Major was about $4K. Annual/winter service $500 x 3. Tires (I'll need a set in the spring) ~$1000.

I put 3500 miles a year on my "fun" car this year, but 1st year is always the highest miles for me. So, 7500 miles in three years is probably reasonable to assume.

87 cents per mile for me.

This doesn't include unexpected incidents, or the exhaust swap, or the challenge wheels I want, or... well, you get it, right?

Add insurance and depreciation and you get a whole different number.

    Insurance ~$1100/yr Depreciation ~ $25K (It's a buyer's market, but I didn't overpay when I bought a year ago.) Around $4.50 per mile.

$1 a mile over what time period? The less a car is driven, the higher this ratio will be due to elapsed time factor maintenance. Ferraris are meant to be driven. Since they are depreciating at an increased rate, why not enjoy them even more?

I have a lot of experience calculating and experiencing the cost per mile on new exotic cars due to being in the rental business. In my experience, it can easily and frequently become much more than $1 per mile for maintenance. Think about the big items:

    Major service = $2,500-7,500 every 15,000 miles = $.16-.5 per mile

    Oil service = $300 per 3,000 miles = $.10 per mile

(Both of the above will obviously be more if you hit their time thresholds before you hit the mileage)

    Brakes = $1,000 per 10,000 miles = $.10 per mile

    Tires = $2,000 per = 10,000 miles = $.20 per mile

Clutch = $2,500-10,000 depending on when you are doing it (whether the engine is already out) every 5,000-15,000 miles = $.16-2.00 per mile (the higher range is more accurate for Lamborghinis than Ferraris)

There are lots of other things but that could be $.86-3.00 per mile already.

That does not include things that just generally wear, break, rattle, fail, etc. Most of these will be covered under warranty but if you have a car that is over 5 years old, I recommend planning for $1.00 per mile just for these types of repairs.

These were not the subject of the first poster's questions, but as we all know there is still more to consider:

You will also have insurance, detailing, storage, etc. I would estimate $.25 per mile for cleaning and paint correction if you want to drive your car and keep it detailed in as new condition.

Also, expect depreciation to be $5-100 per mile (that is not a typo and I am not kidding), particularly over the past year.

Ultimately, you may find that pretty much anyone can afford to buy one of these cars and park it in the garage. It can quickly cost quite a lot to drive them. I suppose the old adage that "if you have to ask, you really can't afford it," may still hold true. If you don't ask, though, you are probably just paying a lot more than you would have planned for.

    Happy driving.

Driving a 550 20,000+ miles cost me $20,000 (at least) in repairs and maintantence. The car depreciated $40,000 in five years. Total cost = $3 a mile.

Not a Ferrari, but I got my '85 BMW 635 for near-free, spent about $20K over four years on it, drove it daily (when it wasn't in the shop) for those years and put on 30K miles, got $1700 trade in on a '99 VW Beetle. Including fuel & odds/ends, probably worked out to $.75/mi.

The 308 is too early to tell. Heavily front-loaded on expense, it will all depend on length of ownership and miles driven.

Out of curiosity, I went though all my 430 records and added up my costs. This car was delivered new 8/05 and now has 13,700 miles.
    The total is 6350.92.
    This includes 3 annual services
    one set of Pirelli tires.
    one set of brake pads
    Optional items:
    extra oil change
    floor jack
    fire extinguisher installed
    V1 hard wire
alignment (these cars are often delivered out of spec)
    windshield chip repair
    These items cost 1305.54

If I did not track the car, it would not need the fire extinguisher and would still have original brake pads.
The Pirellis are about $500 more than Bridgestones and don't last as long.

In 2009, I anticipate another set of tires at 16-17K and an annual service at $400-500.

Its like a horse. It costs the same if you drive it or not.

    Might as well use it.

I'm 7.5 years into ownership of my lowly 328, and am over $1/mile in maintenance. I haven't added it up, but would guess $1.25/mile. Doesn't include gas, insurance, etc.

The trick to lowering your cost per mile is to run it more miles :)

6 years, 54,000 miles, about $10,000 in repairs/fluids/etc over the years not counting the completely optional set of rims and some modifications. That's about $.20/mile, and I have a fresh set of belts/bearings and am set for the next 50,000 miles.

The wild card is a car out of warranty. If a car has been trouble free then you greatly reduce any surprises without the warranty. IMO the $1 per mile driven is pretty accurate starting at say 1000 miles each year whether you drive the car or not. Most cars are probably driven 2,000 miles a year on average. So, a yearly service bill of $2,000 is certainly a reality and it'd probably go up from there. An F service manager could confirm all this pretty easily based on what he sees.

Shouldn't the relatively old $1.00 per mile be updated for inflation?
