I visited the Italian Cultural Center in Stone Brook Ill Monday to view my father's hand carved replica of St. Peter's. I took five years to complete, three to draw the plans and two years to carve. He and my grandfather drew blueprints after taking measurements and photographs of St. Peter's. It was blessed by Pope Pius and toured the world between 1950 and 1953. The detail is unreal. The family has another replica of St. Marks Square in Venice that is just as spectacular. It took nine years to build and was completed in 1963. http://web.mac.com/sanmarcopiazza/iweb/Site/Home.html The Saint Marks is available for purchase.

It was all hand carved from beech and burch wood and painted to look like marble. 400,000 pieces. The lights and the fountans work and the bells ring. Here are some of the parts.

Attilio hand carved many intricate details in the arches, filigrees, narrow canals and dark passages - even if they would never be seen without pulling the model apart. He only used native woods of birch, beech and cirmolo.

He often found it necessary to travel to Venice to confirm data or obtain new information before proceeding further with the model. His work was popular and his friends were interested in the progress of the model so he held open house in his studio on Sunday afternoons.

Nine years later the model of St. Mark’s was finished - August 1963.

That's pretty hard core. Very impressive.
