True, it does sound like fuel starvation.

Could also be a small amount of water in the fuel tanks too, perhaps?

Either way, a thorough pre-flight check would catch both low fuel and water in the bottom of the tanks.

I had good instructors when I took flying lessons back in the 1990's. A common question while taxiing to the run-up area was hour many hours & minutes of fuel did we have on board. They taught me to always stick the tanks with the clear plastic measuring tube and compare the readings to the fuel gauges on the panel.

They do keep their aircraft in the open (in various states of disrepair), and we've had a bunch of rain in the last week.

Like you said a proper pre-flight would have prevented that, I'm afraid I cant count how many times I've seen them stroll across the ramp with a student, hop right in and fire away. I assume they do a run up..
I will say this for them, they always seem to be very busy, 30 minutes listening to Van Nuys tower you will always hear 1 or 2 "Echo Foxtrot" on frequency.

This was one of the flight schools I elected not to use....

The last thing I would do after making an emergency landing is hang around for the news crews and start running my mouth.

D, is this the school at Signature West?

They are on the open ramp in the far north west corner ( off Roscoe by the Home Depot), not sure if that's still signature, they change names every week it seems.

Ok I know where they are now....just east of the old TWC (big blue hangar) building.
