I will keep this thread for my updates regarding the new Becker system. And whenever I discover something new, I will just post it here. The new Becker is a charm. It is so good and I never thought Ferrari would put such clever system in their cars. Of course it can't be compared to Alpine or such high-end brands, but it is light years better than the old Becker. The Navigation system's data is now loaded on a CF/Microdrive card. The system can support up to 4GB CF/Microdrive cards. This means that we can buy blank cards and load MP3's. The user manual even shows how the file structure should be created by the user. The new Becker comes with a 2GB card that contains all the Navigation data for the continent as shown in one of the pictures. The only draw back is that you might not be able to use the Navigation while having another card inside for the MP3's. I am still to try that though. Maybe once you choose your route and route guidance starts, the system just loads it to its flash memory and has no need for the card during the trip. One other thing I will try later is buying a 4GB card and copying all the Navigation card's contents to it while maintaining the file structure. Then load my MP3's with the same file structure shown in the usermanual. I don't know if it will do the trick, but I don't see a reason why shouldn't it. Plus, when you take out the unit covering the card, the system starts counting down until it stops everything. This means that it is giving you time to change the card without shutting down the system. The system also supports display color change. There is a vast choice of colors and themes. IMHO it's a very nice touch. The new Becker also has voice commands just like the one available in BMW's and Merc's, and it is very efficient. Something worth mentioning too, now that we are talking about voices, is the ability to change the voice of the person guiding you when using the Navigation. One thing that was nice to discover too is the system's integration with iPod. Yes, the system now recognizes the CD changer as an external device and the user now have the choice of specifying the external device as shown in one of the pictures. I am still to discover how and where the iPod can be connected. Here are the pictures. I've used dozen of nav systems in cars, boats and plane. You really need a larger screen, color and touch for it to be useable. I agree its getting better, but it still sucks. They need to drop Becker and find a new OEM supplier. The $2500 option is still not worth the price.
I agree whole heartedly. It is getting better, but still has a way to go. Having used many, many nav systems, both aircraft and automobile, the screen really does need to be larger with better visual depictions. 75% of what humans learn is taken in visually. I know you are not "learning" where to go, but it is easier to process with a better visual representation.
I think Ferrari intentionally made that screen small to match the size of the F1 shifter! With M-B nav systems, there is a way to get in to change the voice. You can even code in for a British sounding voice! I do not know if this would work for the Ferrari system, however.
with screens so cheap these days, it would make sense for all manufactures to create a pop out large touch screen. Why not make the whole nave touch screen and remove the buttons all together? This way, the screen is as big as the dash can allow.
The 430 has a cockpit layout that was designed in the 90s. I guess the next generation will have a LCD display instead of the gauges, just like the 612 or 599. Then we will have a screen in the direct view of the driver.
I agree that the system can not compete with the modern LCD-equipped systems. But trust me, the new system is WAY better than the old one. It has many new functions that were a dream to have on the old one.
Just curious, if anyone in the US has seen this system yet. My dealer just got cars in, none had the new Becker in them. Could be we wont see this system here for awhile if at all.
Here is the user manual of the new system. http://www.becker.de/beckerCC21/www_root/documents/Cascade_En_Operation_Guide.pdf
I still can't get an answer to my iPod integration question. I have an adpater from Becker that works for about 3 minutes and then it returns to the radio. I disconnected the external changer but the software will not let me select an external source regardless of what the owner's manual says. It worked in a 430 without nav. We have been waiting for an answer from Becker for 2 months now.
I got the same unit as shown and have two problems so far. 1. According to the menu, there are controls for subw, equalizer, crossover etc but in the Sound setting menu, all I got to adust are the balance and fader. 2. I successfully paired my Moto V3 with the unit but I can hear people from the other line but people cannot hear me. Wondering if others experience similar problems as I do and any solutions?
I think that Becker system is for Europe only. How can you see that little screen? You know the line " what are you going to do with that little thing?" I am putting in a 6.5" LCD screen under the radio area for my navigation in my 360. I am making a panel that goes below the radio and down to the carpet and covering it in blue matching vinyl so it looks original. The LCD will be housed within this panel.
Morrie, Greg, I think I have this system in my 430 Coupe delivered last month. I know it's a Becker, it has navigation, and the display, etc. looks to be just like it. I have yet to read the manual because I almost never listen to the radio/music when driving the car. This was an option on the car and my dealer said to me when I took delivery, "You have the new system..." or something like that.
Every time I lookked that unit up with Becker its reference was to Europe only. Mike, you might have the unit but maybe not the nav portion.
Becker sell their own ipod adaptor. Does anyone have a photo of the rear of the unit? If its the same as the old one you can use the Dension adaptor.
I have seen them showing up now, if you order bluetooth you get that unit. If you order Nav you get that unit. I am not real found of the newer Becker unit in my 430. You can not see the display with sunglasses on, and the functions seem more complecated. I have one of the older generation TrafficPro units. I think I am going to have it put it when my dealer installs the Tubi.
I have had exactly the same problem (Item 1 above). Ferrari in the UK say it is a fault with the system and say they will replace the entire unit. I just haven't found to take the car in yet as I don't live in the UK. Will let you know how all this gets dealt with in due course.
I had the Becker Ipod adapter fitted today. It took 10mins to fit and cost only £69. You get full functionality and screen display (shows the Ipod menu and all track info) on the Becker head unit.
We've had a couple cars show up with the new Becker head units here at the dealer, but I can't tell you much about it because they're all programed in Italian and we can't swamp them to English until we get a new software disk. Kind of annoying. My first impuse though is, same old dinosaur as before. In my experience though, Beckers headunits have generally be pretty lousy in terms of functionality, sound quality, appearance etc. Becker/Blaupunkt is now owned by Harman Int'l, which I think owns JBL and Inifity brands also. If you want to make an immediate improvement in the sound of the F430 stereo, yank the Becker Headunit and CD changer and replace it with a Pioneer Premier, Eclispe of Alpine headunit. The sound quality so much better from that source and you get all the bells and whistles, XM/Sirius, NAV, XM Traffic, Ipod, Blue Tooth, Harddrives, back up cameras etc.
My 430 spider on order has the subwoofer hifi sound system....I think it's $2000 option. I really would like to use my ipod w/ it. I didn't get nav or bluetooth. I have a $10k aftermarket system in my 360 spider...and it's important to me to have good tunes. Any other input from folks?
My 430 spider has the sub woofer option. Sound is pretty good but the controls are useless, complicated, way too small and almost invisable with sunglasses which you might think they would have figured out their customers would wear in a Spider. Still haven't figured out how to switch CD's in the changer. Absolutely not intutative. For all the bucks, I was really surprised and disappointed there was no built in Sat Radio option. You can get it on a Jeep for God's sake. Not very impressive for the price. Bouncing off the rev limiter makes up for it though.
