Ah, you bastards. I take my car in this morning for a 60,000km service. Having done the oil + filter, coolant and brake fluid change myself 2000km ago, I was hoping to save a bit of money. They ring me up in the afternoon... "uh yeah, your ABS control unit is faulty and needs to be replaced. $950 for the unit, all up $1200 including labour." "Your coolant concentration is a bit low. Do you want it changed?" Hmm. I changed the coolant myself at a BMW dealership, using pre-mixed Castrol 50/50, straight out of the hose... I think I'll leave it. I also wanted them to fix my aircon - it has been hissing loudly and isn't cold (those 40 degree days during summer were fun). I suggested maybe it needed regassing. I took the car in for this exact problem a few months after I bought it and was told there was "nothing wrong with it." Now that the car is out of warranty, I'm told: "Your TX valve is faulty and needs to be replaced. I'll give you a price on that by the time you get here". Gee thanks. I think I'll wear a sign to uni tomorrow: "need change for ABS unit"
Mechanics you can trust... hard to find. I'm all for capitalism but not at the expense of dishonesty.
They didn't fit the control unit (would have to be ordered), and I'm not going to bother with it. I know how to drive a car without ABS. The TX valve: $400.
Sadly not. That service would have been cheap if it was a Ferrari! It was a '97 Volvo 850 sedan. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
and its not even an 850R, they are prety cool wouldnt mind a wagon of one of those to plonk around during the week.
Hmm, I should dump my car and get this. Mileage is a bit crazy though... (mine had 48,000 on the clock when I bought it!) http://yahoo.drive.com.au/used_cars/volvo/8/melbourne/detail.aspx?id=2635170&pg=6&pp=18&d=0&nv=1 2.3L inline 5 Turbo 5 sp manual 185KW 350Nm 1457kg If I'm gonna be blowing my money maintaining an out-of-warranty Euro sedan, it might as well be a bit interesting and have some more go...
So do you guys think this is a good idea? I could drive over there, trade in my current car, buy that one, and drive back with several thousand in change.
i could be wrong, but i don't think there will be many volvo experts around here. Hell...we hardly know anything about ferraris!
Volvo=old mans car hold it !! I'm an old man and I drive a Ferrari .... bugger! there goes that argument my dad had a Volvo ONCE !! He realised his mistake and got rid of it very quickly .... he obviously knew nothing about cars.... he was into Jags ... how sad is that
oil consultant for Santos so he didn't care how much they leaked he did say the Volvo could be improved .... by dropping a wrecking ball on it man, they could have a million HP and you wouldn't be seen dead in it would ya ??
Not that I am admitting to knowing anything about swedish valiants, but the abs thingo is a very very common 850 problem....and only volvo dealers have the diagnostic gear to reset after replacement. I also have heard it can lead to brake lock up problems if not replaced (lock up very easily).
oh i thought abs on a volvo helped you get a midriff like those swedish guys from dude where's my car
