My experience with Land Rover:

  1. Great vehicle, no real problems, would definitely buy another

  2. Good vehicle, few problems, might buy another anyway

  3. Average vehicle, some problems, OK if you can put up with some downtime

  4. Not so good, significant problems, used Ferrari as daily driver due to LR being in the shop so often

  5. Wretched vehicle: ended up marrying girl at the car rental counter at the LR dealership

All right, I'm getting another SUV next year to replace the Jeep, and I like the Land Rovers. I might go for the LR2 or possibly a cpo RR Sport depending on how business goes. I know up front that a Lexus will give me less grief and another Jeep would be cheaper, but I'm willing to accept some service visits in the name of style.

So, if you've owned a Land Rover in the last 5 years, or had one in the household, how would you rate it?

We’ve had a collection of discoveries and range rovers owned by family and friends over the years, none by myself. They seem to be very hit and miss, you either get a good one and encounter few problems, or a bad one and spend most of your time at the dealership. Don’t know anything about the range rover sport though. If it were my hard earned, and I was in the market for a suv, I’d be looking at the offerings of Toyota or Jeep.

    Regards

What exactly do you need an SUV for...carrying more than 5 passengers, hauling bulky cargo, off-road work...what ? Most of the SUVs I see on the road only have 2 or 3 people inside which a nice sedan can do better while having more fun...especially if you get an M car or AMG... why drive an ugly, poor handling ,gas guzzling SUV unless you have too? My wife drives an Infiniti Q56 and it has been a great vehicle...but, she only drives it because she needs it to haul 3 to 6 children at a time along with all the bulky crap that goes with horses such as tack trunks, ect...I will be happy when she can go back to a nice looking BMW sedan...friends don't let friends drive SUVs!

I had a L.R. Discovery...HATED IT. Got rid of it! If you want a great SUV and dependability, get a Toyota.....Why spend more than you have to? Unless you just want to look cool. Toyata has all sizes and all are great vehicles.....sorry, I'm on my Toy. soapbox today.

Bulky cargo... but point taken. I actually use the cargo space more than the back seat.

I can't warm up enough to the Audi A3, but considered that.

I recently went through an SUV buying experience that lasted a lot longer than I wanted it to. We were replacing an '01 Yukon XL. We needed a good sized truck that would pull a large trailer, as we have a boat and I've been known to tow the Ferrari on a trailer. I also have 2 boys that play sports and a 90lb dog that goes away with us for the weekend.

My wife wanted a Rover so badly that she couldn't stand it. She started wanting the RR, then 'settled' on the RR Sport. I asked everyone I came in contact with that owned Rovers, and got a pretty even 50/50 split on reliability. They were either great, or they sucked, there wasn't much in between. I personally wasn't willing to roll the dice. My wife would've done it in a second. One guy told me he had to replace the engine in his RRS after 60 days.

We wound up buying a QX56, and I'm thoroughly impressed with it. It was loaded at a reasonable price, the only options were DVD, roof, and trailer package. For a truck with all the options, I paid less than $50k. I marvel at the legroom in the back seat, it's much more than my Yukon had. All 4 bucket seats are heated. The rear console comes out quickly and easily and gives my dog a place to ride. The 3rd row seats fold flat easily, but if I need them for butts, I can flip the 2nd row forward with one hand. The power liftgate is great when you're running to the truck in the rain carrying wet sports gear and lawn chairs.

(By the way, I have an '01 Yukon XL for sale if anyone is interested :) )

My family Time with a Land rover end with the Brakes going on a hill and my dad jumping out as the truck started to flip but that was some time ago (back when Land rover were work truck and not just play things) Dad look at a LR3 this time around but it looks like we are going for a King Ranch insteed (anyways unless you need the Extra row a Pick up is better then a SUV)

Well, you wouldn't like me on the road, then: I'm single and drive a Jeep Grand Cheerokee!
Why do I need a SUV? I don't NEED one (although it comes handy at time), I just prefer a SUV to any 'nice sedan', of which I had plenty.
It's a matter of personal choice. I like the high seating position of a SUV, compared to the 'deck-chair' position of most sedans; it gives more visibility. Ugly?, That's very subjective, I find many 'normal' cars without appeal. I like the rugged look of my car, and my next one should be a Jeep Commander or a Hummer. Poor handling? You may have a point there, although the latest BMW, Mercs or Volvo SUV seem quite capable.
Gas guzling? True, but here in UK, you can get most SUV with diesel engines, and that do an extra 10m to the gallon compared to gas.
Modern SUV are just as comfortable, powerful, safe as sedans these days.
I have travelled all across Europe with the Jeep GC, and didn't find it different from the Merc, BMW, Alfa sedans I used to drive before; yes, I found I enjoyed a better view, and felt safer.
    So what this SUV bashing?

Thanks Jim, I think the QX56 and Yukon are more truck than I need. Frankly the Jeep Liberty/GC/BMW X3 are about the right size. The cargo space is great for hauling bags of mulch, sports gear, etc.

I suppose if I lease it for 3 years, and have the CA lemon law, I can't get hurt financially. But getting stranded on the freeway or having brake issues is obviously a bigger deal.

If I could get excited about the new Acura RDX that would be a safer option.

Always the Europeans defending those SUVs and ranting about freedom of choice... ;)

Feeling safe and being safe are quite different things. SUVs have a higher center of gravity and are heavy which affects their ability to remain upright in an accident and to brake in a short distance and to maneuver to avoid an accident. Carry your SUV to a track day and see what I mean...As far as the BMW SAVs and MB's ML class, they are a little better but they only seat five anyway...the same as a sedan...and they can't really haul or trailer any more than a sedan either...so what's the point in buying one of those ugly ducklings over a sedan? If you want a view, buy a beach house...for driving, buy a car...not an SUV...

I didn't read all the posts on this thread yet.

But here is my family experience with the Land Rover cars.

2 of my realtives recently bought Range rovers ( I think they were both about $85k)

The first one got lemon lawed and replaced within 3 months.
the second went about 8 months and is in the process.

I am not a customer of Range Rover after these 2 incidents.
2 identical cars, both sold to my family, both lemons.....no thanks

Just tell me what's wrong with freedom of choice, and isn' it something everyone should aspire to? Or, have I been given the wrong message all along?

Ok, I don't have a Land Rover, but know a few people who have them, and rave about them.
Experience varies from one to the other. In general, great cars: the Range Rover Vogue is not called the Rolls-Royce of 4 X 4 for nothing. It's a marvellous car, and the dynamics are stunning too for such a luxurious car.
I mean, it's a 4 X 4 that can actually go off-road and humiliate the competition. It's quite good on the road as well, very comfortable and sure-footed.
I have read about engine failures too, but none of my mates had that.
Gearboxes (automatic) can be a problem after 40/50,000 miles. Some of the electronics and electrics (instruments, CD, etc...) are troublesome, usually detected soon after purchase and rectified under warranty. I heard from 2 people that had central locking failure, and had to have new locks fitted. Front tyres and discs pads wear is above normal. Parts are reasonable for that category of car. No matter how one drives, fuel consumption is heavy, I mean HEAVY! It's a heavy and powerful car with a large frontal area, square shape, what can one expect?
Here is UK, quality of service varies from dealer to dealer. Don't know about the lastest Sport, but Range Rovers keep value better than the competition. The Discovery (don't know how you call it in the States), is not as good as the Range, IMO. Finish not as good, and not as stable as the Range.
I don't think that you want to know about the Freelander (probably not imported), LR's answer to the Suzuki Vitara. 4 letters, begins with C, finishes with P!

The Freelander came to the U.S. and went, largely unnoticed and unloved. My neighbor had one for maybe a year before trading it on a BMW X3.

I can accept/handle fuel costs, as I know what I'm getting into. Very interested in input on reliability, and I'd say 45-50,000 miles on a tranny is atrocious.

My parents have had their Discovery Series II for 2 years now, and have only had to replace a slightly leaky radiator. Nothing I'd consider too bad as far as repairs go.
I have had the pleasure of working on some older Discoverys that were riddled with problems. Many, no doubt, due to owner neglect, but I rarely see a Discovery Series I that's still in decent shape.

I read the headline and wanted to vent but my fingers are still cramping from all the posts I left on the Range Rover Forum. My wife and son were a victim of the totally unexpected differential failure on the highway in our Range Rover. It was such a horrible experience, neither one of them would ever get in it again. I had the car for 9 months, it was in the shop 6 times. Finally had enough, went to the dealership to trade it in on a hopefully more reliable Sport SC. The offered $20K less than I paid ( less tham Blue Book and the car was perfect-dark blue/tan) and would not come off of list in the Sport. If any prospective buyers want to drive it themselves and suffer the consequences, fine, but do not subject your spouse or children into the risk of driving one. 33% have the diff. failures, and to listt all of the other problems they are notorious for will get my fingers cramping again.

I had zero problems with my Defender 90, but there's not much that can go wrong on those. :)

My cousin HAD an 04 RR and it spent considerable time in the shop. He traded it in on a LX. If you need to go offroad the RR works very nicely. I've wheeled with a number of the new ones and they are quite capable. If I didn't spend a fair amount of time offroad and out of cell phone range I'd consider one, but until then I'll stick with my yawn inducing reliable but equally capable offroad(or better) Toyota Land Cruiser.
