12v Power Source in Engine Compartment

    I am looking for a 12v source back in the engine compartment. Prefer a source that is always hot reagrdless if the ignition is on or not. Second choice would be a switched 12v source.

    Okay....so what am I thinking of doing??? Don't be too hard on me, but I am thinking of putting a small LED light back there to reflect off the engine when I am at car shows.

    Anyone do this that can give me some advice and direction?

    Always hot.. a couple ways you could do it.. I presume that you're going to plug it in when at car shows? Basically install a plug that is hot in the compartment?

    1) put a line to the thick line from the starter. This'll always be hot. Negative ground to one of the bolted lines beneath the side panels.
    2) Go into the compartment behind the driver seat and install a line to the + terminal, put a fuse on it and then push it throught the bulkhead with the other lines. Put a (-) line ground to the chassis on either side of the engine compartment. Plug it in at shows.

    If you want a permanent LED light that is on when you're driving the car.. I'd be very hesitant to connect to things in the engine compartment. I wouldn't want any of my wiring to mess up the engine sensors or ECU's.

    If this is the case, I would connect my ground (-) to one of the chassis grounds under the covers on each side of the engine compartment. I would then run a line from behind the passenger compartment relay #51 with a fuse on it to the lights in the engine compartment. Specifically the top horizontal electrical connection in the middle that leads to s117g per wiring diagram.

    I have not done this myself. I don't recommend doing this. Do this at your own risk. This information is being provided as entertainment value only etc. etc. I'm sure there is someone here that can chime in who has done it without any probelms.

    If you're going to T off a live source please put a fuse as close to the T as possible.

    Oh yeah almost forgot.. try to protect the line as best as possible from hot things in the engine compartment..

    Has anyone installed lights like this? Did the heat affect them???

    VR....took a look at it today and couldn't figure out a way to get the 12v source through the firewall; from the fuse box behind the seat to the engine compartment. Advice?

    Maybe this suggestion could be easier to achieve the desired effect...

    Why not build a rig that you can put in for show purposes and then take out. So use an external power source eg a dedicated battery for the LEDs, velcro the rig in subtlely. Not sure if the velcro can stay in the engine bay due to heat or not. Might be able to find heat resistant velcro. Velcro the battery out of sight.

    100% certain that someone on this forum has done this before. I remember seeing the pictures. It was a 360. Keep searching.

    Consider getting a high intensity battery powered LED and position within your Engine Compartment ... "0" risk, unless you forget to remove ;)

    I admittedly haven't done this myself.. and haven't looked at it with detail.. bu the electrical lines behind the drivers seat go out to the engine compartment on the right, outer part of the compartment. If there is that goopy sealant in there to seal the lines I don't know.. I presume.. presume. That there is a rubber seal through which the lines run. I did this before on my porsche where I used a coat hangar to push a line through to the engine compartment. I wouldn't try this on the Ferrari because you don't want to nick the protective rubber/plastic shield on the electrical lines to the engein compartment. Perhaps try a smooth wood or plastic rod to open the way into the engine compartment and then either push or pull the electrical wire with it. If you follow on the outside of the main lines to the engine bay I predict it should work fine. Run the line behind the seats beneath the tunnel covering and make a note of the installation for future reference.

    Again, do this at your own risk! And there have been people that have done it before.. not sure if they used batteries or direct connection...

    The main harness for the engine runs through the bottom corner and out through the bulkhead via a crossmember. It has a rubber grommet either side and exits below the left fuel tank adjascent to the handbrake adjuster. To access it you need to lift the steel panel that holds the fuse boxes behind the drivers seat. You also need the undertray off to access it on the engine side. Running a cable through is tricky, because the tank is secured to the triangulated portion of the chassis, so running a cable through there brings it near the manifold. If you must fit a light I'd go with the suggestion above and use a battery powered device that you can clip in place temporarily. Be aware that every inch of that bay gets very, very hot. I've fitted NOS to a few 360's and it took some serious work to keep heat out of everything and keep it stable.
