I had the pleasure to drive ZR' F40 across part of Canada and back across ND and MT to drop down to Colorado. We had also a 355 F1 driven by ZR auto's futur Ferrari Tech that will be trained by Dave Helms. We drove from one gas station to the next one since I couldn't do more than 180 miles with a tank.
I'm very thankfull to the" ZR" man who "loan"me his F40 to get her ready for New Orleans. It was a great experience to drive on the hwy that super car. Not much room behind the wheel and the seat made my butt sore. I was happy to see the fuel gauge going down so I could walk at the station. The Tubi was nice for a while but after 11 hours in the car with just fuel stops, my head was empty !!! Most of you will say that it was already like that !!!!
We created a sr=torm in a small village in ND while looking for fuel at night. In a minute, the all teenager population was around the car and we got fuel !!!
For the only night, we were surrounded by pick up trucks in the parking.
A small encounter with the small village cops who did their best to catch us, but we did well and got away without troubles.
A great souvenir for me, now, I'm back at the ranch and it was time to do car wash to get the 2 cars like new.
Only a F40 would give you such a blast!
Even after so many years in "super" cars, this was like a dream. Thanks Mr Ferrari

    WOW.
What a story. Its a shame that the F40 drinks so much juice....

On a side note. Im might be attending a Ferrari Club day in Sydney soon. There is a F40 GTE expected to turn up....

Just read this to Roland ("Dr Speed") on the phone, and he said the tank is too small but big enough for his bladder. Avg mileage 15.2.

    Roland,
How come only 180 miles between stops? With a 30 gallon tank that's only 6 mpg.

    Rick

    Cool story for sure!! Thanks.

Great Thread! When I eventually took my eyes of the speedo on the top picture I noticed that there are 2 lights on the dash that say 'slow down' on them. What are they for, and if they don't light up at 180mph when do they light up?!!

    Thanks :)

Thanks Guys, it was fun for sure and to respond to our buddy Rick, if you keep your foot on above 150, fuel goes down at the same rate as your speed!!
Got to pay some price for speed but the car just runs easy at that speed and very stable.
Maybe not like the LM but not bad at all.
The 2 lights are in case the temp went up but it ever did even after a long stretch.
The cops story was that they saw the 2 F cars and wanted to get us. They had a car in every corners in town, got one behind, in front 2 miles down and than they called the next city (past 10pm) to get us a reception team. That's when we decided to crash after 11.30 hours on the road with stops just for fuel and human needs. Food came at bed time..priority first.
I feel very lucky to be able to drive such cars, a few weeks ago, the 550 for 1100 miles and now that dream machine.
Thank ZR, Canada got a real driver with you !

the rumored 30 gallon tank.... I must admit I am not sure of the exact size of the fuel tanks on my F40, but with the needle on empty and the low fuel light on, the most fuel I have ever been able to put in is 18 gallons.

So, 180 miles is about right at the speeds Roland was running...

Interesting. There is only one F40 GTE in Australia S/N 84503 which has been sitting in a Laverton workshop for 18mths. Don't think there has been another imported. Do you know which car is expected to turn up in Sydney?

Roland you are one crazy dude. So how long did you keep the F40 at or above 150? Until you got to the next gas station?

I never made more than 172 miles with a tank at speed over 130...if you keep making forward jumps to higher number, the fuel goes away in no time. Faster you go, more stops were needed.

    Hi Roland. Great pictures!
One question for you though: The boost gauge over on the right side of your instrument cluster appears to be reading approx 17psi, which I would assume is about max? (This is based on the assumption that your right foot is deep in the throttle, and not at something less - or partial - throttle). Not having been in an F40, I can only make guesses based on what I see in your pictures...
    Thanks
    Jim
