My father in law just picked up a new Samsung DLP, the one on the funky stand. He swears that when he puts in a 16:9 dvd the people look stretched. Since it is a 16:9 tv shouldn't those DVD's look perfect? Anybody know what he is doing wrong?? I'm going up there next week so any advice would be appreciated.

    1. Is the DVD a wide- screen format?

    2. Are the settings for format on the DVD player correct?

First, verify the two items that LetsJet mentioned. Then if the people are still stretched, your dad needs to change "sceen mode". The tv is not smart enough to figure out on its own which mode it should be in for every dvd. The Samsung probably has 4 or 5 different screen modes, Wide, Wide Zoom, Zoom, Panarama etc. One of these modes will work. You just have to keep changing the modes until the people look correct. You'll probably have to change the mode again the next time you play a different dvd.

I fully agree. Had the same issue with my first DVD with my own Samsung HLP-5065 (16:9). Things looked really stretched!

The mode on the TV was fine, but I had to go into the options on the DVD player and specifically select 16:9. Also, if it's an option, ENABLE PROGRESSIVE SCAN! If things still aren't right, need to investigate the viewing modes on the TV. Have you successfully seen a 16:9 "HD" (high definition" image on the set yet (through Comcast HD or satellite provider)?

Finally, on some DVDs you will STILL see horizontal black bars. This is normal. As long as people don't look stretched / distorted, this is to be expected. Some DVDs play at an aspect ratio even MORE rectangular than your 16:9 can display... So this is the reason.

These are very nice sets - enjoy!

guys, thanks for the help. It's so hard when he expects me to fix it over the phone. I was thinking the dvd player might be the problem since he swears he went through the samsung menu's on the tv. I also made sure he was using a 16:9 dvd. thanks again.
