anyone know if ther is a 166 MM still in NH? owned by E. Lyon.
Steve, I have seen such a car at Paul Russells Essex facility a few years ago. I think it was owned by a gentleman named Lyon's From what I observed it was part of a much larger collection stored & maintained at that site. One beautiful car... The NH part is not something I'm sure of but why not ...there are two Bugatti Atlantics in New England...why not a nice Ferrari... Charlie
Right. thast how i first discovered the car. Now i'm trying to find it so i can photograph it. I sent Mr. Lyons a letter but have gotten no response. I didn't know if it ever made it's way any local ferrari events.
hey stevel48..nice to meet someone in the newton area..I am also in the area...looking forward to reading more posts..get subscribed and lets chat Andrew
Steve, I believe I saw the 166 MM in question at the concourse formerly held at the Crane Estate in Ipswich, MA. If I am correct Mr. Lyon has displayed several cars there over the years. Event was not held this past year due to political squabbles etc. Hope it is held this year, excellent display of wonderful cars!
hmmm, yeah. It's not on the crane mansion schedule of events yet. I'll jsut have to see what shows up at tuto italiano and the limerock historic challenge. thanks for the welcome too M!
I have been told that both Mr. Herrington and Mr. Lyon have formidible Ferrari Collections. As is typical in New England they probably try to be descreet about such matters. I have done work for several large collectors in Connecticut and was always told not to discuss anything that I had seen nor was I allowed visitors while at there garages. To bad, it is more fun to share!
166MM s/n 0006M is owned by Ervin Lyon. The car is kept in a private climate controlled garage at Paul Russell & Co. in Essex, Massachusetts. For pictures see my website: http://www.ferrarihistory.homestead.com/166mm.html Mr. Lyon also currently has a 250GT Lusso, 275GTB and 500 Superfast. Within the last couple years he sold his 275GTS, 250GT SWB and 250SWB California Spyder. There are many other important Ferraris in Sherman Wolf's Collection up in New Hampshire including 500TRC s/n 0662MDTR, 212 Export s/n 0078E, a California Spyder and a 275GTB/4. Lee Herrington also has many nice cars and Peter LeSaffre has recently become a fairly big buyer. -Jarrett
No 166 in Sherman Wolf's Collection, never has been to the best of my knowledge. However, he does have a 212 Barchetta, which looks very similar to a 166. See the following page for pictures: http://www.ferrarihistory.homestead.com/212export.html -Jarrett
Well, actually he has both a 166mm and a 212 Barchetta (actually owned by Phil Hill previously). vty, --Dennis
Hi Dennis, Which 166MM do you have Sherman Wolf owning? I believe they are almost all accounted for unless he bought it recently. I do agree that the 212 Export is ex-Phil Hill. -Jarrett
Hi Dennis, Thank you very much for the picture. On the far right, with only the rear visible is 500F2 s/n 0210. This car was sold at the most recent Monterey Auctions. The red Barchetta is 212 Export s/n 0078E. The Blue/White car is 340MM s/n 0350AM, the last 340MM built. Finally to the left of that is a 288GTO. So, although both the 340MM and the 212 Export have bodies somewhat similar to 166MMs, neither is a 166MM as Sherman Wolf has not owned one. However, I would be very interested to see other pictures from the Sherman Wolf collection, could you email me privately please? [email protected] Thanks -Jarrett
Hell, Jarrett, ya got me! And here I thought that it was a 166! Oops! I actually had dinner with Sherman and Phil Hill a couple of weeks ago (Phil was a guest of honor at a private event at the MFA). They've driven the 212 together on a couple of adventures, including the Mille Miglia (though it could have been the Colorado Grand). I need to get to the frame store this week to frame the poster that Phil kindly signed - how cool is that?!? He signed this poster of the Lauren Collection next to the Alfa that he used to own, which he really regrets selling, much like selling the 212 that Sherman now owns! Sherman is planning on bringing one or two of these nice toys down to Tutto Italiano, weather permitting. Come by and check 'em out. There are a bunch of pictures of his garage from a series of private tours the Ferrari Club put on as part of our NH Weekend Ramble over the years. I'll have to dig up the link somewhere.... vty, --Dennis
Hi Dennis, Thanks for sharing your story about Phil Hill. I am yet to see the exhibit at the MFA as I'm still out at school at Notre Dame in Indiana (we finish in 2 weeks, and then I will be a senior next year!) I actually saw Phil Hill out at Monterey this past August and got his autograph along with Dan Gurney and Carroll Shelby each on reprinted Jesse Alexander photographs, should make a nice framed set. However, I'm looking forward to seeing all the Lauren cars together in person. I have seen them all separately up at Paul Russell & Co. over the years but am yet to get a "group" picture. I am glad to hear that Sherman is thinking of bringing some cars down to Tutto Italiano this year. I was one of the judges in the vintage class last year, we had some lovely Lussos and the 250GT Boano, but I find the old racing Ferraris much more interesting. McNeil's GTO was a treat. I also loved seeing Sherman's 500TRC when he brought it down a few years ago, and I'd seen his 212 Export and 340MM at the Castle Hill Concours. Anyways, all the best -Jarrett
