I recently received a copy of "Vintage Motorsport" from 1992.Got it from Italy for $011 shipping $12.50. In it is an article about this car after it arrived in L A for Randy McDougal in 1953. It was an ex Rubirosa car with three 4 choke webers and probably other engine mods.Randy raced it at Bakersfield and Pebble in 1953 and then during the winter made major changes in the car. The Vignale bady was removed and stored away. It was replaced by a truly ugly cigar, cycle fendered body with rear deck mounted spare, sort of like 0086, flat sheet metal fenders, big ugly hood scoop to cover the coffee can air cleaners and a single curved windscreen. The rear suspension was modified with quarted eliptic leaf springs. trailing arms and panhard bar. The dash seems to have only two guages, a tach and a small guage probably for temp or oil. A special superlegra type frame was made to support the body and no bumpers installed. In 1954 McDougal raced the car at Bakersfirld and Pebble and then at Willow crashed the car destroying the body and bending the chassis. The car ended up 20 feet , upside down with McDougle unhurt but dangling from the cockpit. He decided to give up racing particularly when his insurance company was going to cancel his policy. You see his broker was at the race and witnessed the crash. The car was repaired and the Vignale body installed. The modified rear suspension remained.Mcdougle then traded the car for a 300 SL Gullwing. If anyone can add to this tale please do{Marcel}. This is what makes this hobby such fun. If Sutterfied still owns the car let's see if the rear suspension is still the same. just one man's opinion tongascrew

Approximately 1966. Incidentally, the 4-choke carbs are not a modification; they were standard on the 250MM.

Ed,Do you have any pics or comments about the engine? I don't recall any 166 with this carb set up. Some of the internals must have been unique to accept this setup. There is mention in the article that the engine was difficult to controle with its "modifications".The picture at Pamona seems to be an example of this. If you would like a copy of the article with the pics of the light weight special body I refer to send me your address and I will make a copy for you. Yes, the 166MM/53; it looks like three (3) carburators trying to steal an engine ;)

Nice pics from Ed Niles and Giotto. Thanks.
For history sake, 0342MM is not the ex Rubirosa 166 MM/53. Rubi's was '0050M' from his barchetta > '0308MM', in reality 0328MM. It was also Fernand Tavano's first Ferrari. In UK from Belgium with the same owner for decades.

BTW I'd like to be able to read the Bo registration (cardboard provisionnal plate) on John von Neumann's 2.5 TRC (0672) who is frightening poor Grimm.

'm smiling, Antoine, at the vision of poor Grimm. i remember somewhere reading that some of those early cars did not have a sway bar (anti-roll bar), and that Phil Hill added one to great advantage. I don't recall what car it was, but I have a mental image of a Vignale spider, maybe 0286. Maybe Phil needed to work his magic on Grimm's car! Or maybe Grimm needed to take lessons from Phil?

Tom, so barchetta is wrong listing Rubirosa as the first owner of 0342.That's fine. Nothing new. So who was the first owner or history of the car before McDougal. What I do is update and correct my printouts from barchetta on these cars. thanks tongascrew

    Hello,
New here, so hope this comes out in the proper place after I click "submit post". My great uncle was Randall MacDougall, the screen writer - director, married to my great aunt Nanette Fabray. I've recently been looking up family history, and this car came into subject play. I always had an interest, raised in a Ferrari collectors home, my Father. He owned a similar Ferrari, a 1954 250 MM that of which I remember there being 9 vehicles remaining surviving, or produced. I have brought this to the attention of my cousin, Randy's son, Jamie Macdougall, and he was ecstatic about the find of yet another b&w photo I have of Randy racing the car, in the original body, in Monterey California (supposedly) circa 1957. Times, dates, locations are all speculatory at this time.
It is wonderful to find more knowledge on the history of not only the car itself, but that of my uncle.
My cousin Jamie has told me he remembers the car at home, but did not remember where it went from there. Apparently it went to Orange County as I see posted here. Randy and Nan lived in Beverly Hills in those early years so I assume the car was at their home there. They later moved to a home on Sunset in Pacific Palisades, where in this home he had a heart attack, and did not survive, in 1973, as I remember well.
In the interest of recorded history, if anyone should have any questions, or have anymore info I may transfer to his son, it would be appreciated. You may contact me here, if I can find my way back to this location, ha ha, or via email at ; [email protected]
