Looking to buy a new computer monitor. I think I want a 19" flat panel. Anyone have any recommendations, brands, places to purchase-- good or bad? I know they are around $400-$500.

Keep in mind, "Flat Panel Monitor" does NOT mean LCD. Flat Panel typically means the monitor screen itself is like a trinitron ultra flat screen. So... look for pictures/dimensions upon ordering.

I have had a Viewsonic 19" LCD for almost four years and love it.
I have other Viewsonic screens and like them too.

Dell-look for the coupons and browse their site. Some of their deals change from week to week. First week i was looking they were giving free memory or RAM upgrades and the next week the monitors week $100 or so cheaper. I ended up getting a 18.1" flatscreen, which i'm very happy with.

I've had a Dell 19" LCD for close to two years. Outstanding monitor! Crystal clear, and not a single dead pixel. I assume their latest 19" and 20" offerings are of equal quality.

    hmmmm. some items here: http://www.gotapex.com/

still looking for others. I have a 19" LCD at home, it is an off brand, but was the largest at the time, and the first to have a P-in-P / Full Screen television option. Although it is just an NFren (yea, sounds weird, right?), it works well. But I rate it at a 6/10 display wise.

one other note, when it comes to LCD monitors, or any monitor at all, SPEND MORE than you have to. more than a cpu, more than memory. the monitor will be the only thing you will be looking at no matter how fast or slow or whatever you are waiting on / working on / etc.

Always, spend more on the keyboard, the monitor and your chair. Those items do not change.

I also have a Dell LCD with a tv tuner with picture in a picture. It's nice to be able to just check the news, for example, while doing something useful. Similar for some football games or golf tournaments.

It is more expensive to get the LCD but, as others have said -- you look at the monitor all the time, even when the CPU isn't running.

The problem with this is the resolution and refresh rate. Typical refresh rate for a television is (IIRC) 69hz interlaced while monitors are 70-75hz non-interlaced. That means, the television is only refreshing the odd # of lines for half of the refresh rate and the even # of lines for the other half of the refresh rate. Non-interlaced means the screen refreshes 70 / 72 / 75 or whatever you set it to, times per second. While your eyes can only differentiate, typically up to 72, they will become irritated at 65 non-interlaced at a particular distance.

Just watch your eyes. If it is an HDTV, different rules apply.
