1950s Speedster values

    Do we have any experts here in the current market values of these cars? I've talked to both Symbolic here in San Diego and Autosport Design up in NY, and couldn't get a consistent answer (i.e., they were about $80,000 apart on a similar car).

    Have prices softened at all? I know they're not rare, but they are solid collectibles at this point.

    I need (OK, want) a vintage sports car, and this one has been high on my list since forever.

    Hardly an expert, but values seemed to really shoot up in the last year or so; these things were in the 200k neighborhood, or more, for restored no stories cars. Frankly, think that's a bit much, given how underpowered they are. The one at Autosports affiliate- Aston New England, is asking 225 and it is not a numbers matching car.
    Sloancars has two, both asking 195k. I know that Paul Russell has had some, very expensive, but his cars are usually top notch. My bet is that these won't soften as quickly as 356 coupes. The convertible D is sorta cool in the same vintage way as the Speedster, i think they are more rare, but those also started to see a hike last year; maybe those have softened, though, since they don't have the same cachet as the speedster.
    For this kind of money, I'd probably want more car, but i guess that's personal. The later 356 cabrios are also pricey. FJ has a pretty nice one on their site right now, I would think those cars would go soft before Speedsters.
    Let us know what you find.

    First of, I think the current market values for Speedsters are inflated. Probably, $170,000 ballpark is the price for nicely restored ones. There's one w/ M. Sheehan and European Collectibles in Costa Mesa near SD. If your purpose is to own a roadster to cruise down 405, that'll be nice. Have you considered Carrera 2, high performance but more costly and rare ? w/ smiles Jimmy

    I would also consider a 67S, if you are willing to give up the open cabriolet. The 67S has good potential, several years from now. When we are all old farts, during the next red hot collector car market, these things will take off in value. I have a decent 67S matching # car, that needs a lot of work - of course I am biased towards the 67S. At the time of the peak market, 67S show cars were already trading over the bottom six figures.

    The 67S, has a lot of things going for it - first year of the 911S, relatively low production #'s with a lot of cars already destroyed from rust, first year of the Fuchs wheels, SWB, Weber carbs and hot factory cams with a lot more power than the 356, and they also have the 4 wheel ventilated disc brakes and tight suspension. It is kind of the poor man's 73RS, with less weight and no decals.

    I agree, it's a very basic car for that kind of money -- and $225K buys a lot of other very desirable cars. I admit I don't see the value at those levels. The Conv D doesn't have the looks, IMO, but it is the A body style which I like.

    I'm resigned that I'm going to pay six figures for a real Speedster, but I was hoping that the current softness in the sports car market would have hit the early Porsches more. Apparently not.

    I like the early 911s. I've been keeping an eye out for a LWB sunroof coupe, preferably a 2.4, preferably black per the COA, but the Speedster keeps pulling me back in -- to me vintage sports cars are open cars.

    But, as always, if the right 911 in the right colors/specs becomes available, I might end up going that way. I'd like to do some of the vintage tours and events before I get to old fart status.

    just make sure your 67S has the factory sunroof and you have your 'open' vintage car! :D

    What about those early 911S Targas with the softtop? pretty funky....

    That's a real possibility.

    Funky is the word. I'm still trying to convince myself that I like how they look, and not very successfully.

    Wait until fall of next year. Don't worry prices will come down. Don't think for a second that this economic mess is over. It'll get worse still.
