You have to remember that with the V6 F1 and F2 front-engined cars from 1957 to 1960, there were hardly two the same. Frame layouts and tube sizes varied greatly - Doug Nye's 'Dino: The Little Ferrari' (now in print again) is the best book covering these cars.

The 1957, 1958 and 1959 cars all had the engine angled so the propshaft ran to the left of the seat. All had drum brakes until Hawthorn's F1 car at the 1958 Italian GP was fitted with discs; his car also had a special long chassis as he was tall.

The 1959 cars were mechanically the same as the earlier ones, with disc brakes as standard and a new more sleek body style with exhausts under the rear suspension instead of over it as in 1957-58.

The 1960 cars were all new, although they looked similar to the 1959 cars. The engine was angled the other way so the gearbox could be reversed, the tail fuel tank was smaller, and the side fuel tanks were bigger and formed part of the external skin (which you can see in these photos).

All the surviving original cars are 1960-type (one with Bernie Ecclestone, one in the Biscaretti Museum IIRC, a Formula 2 car which Cuppellini had, and Phil Hill's 1960 Italian GP winner s/n 0007 now fitted with a 250TR engine since late 1960 and with Tony Smith). There are two authentic reconstruction cars built by Graypaul Motors in the UK around spare engines and other odd components from the Ecclestone car when it was with Anthony Bamford. There are also a couple of less authentic replicas with Fiat Dino 2.4 engines.

    Thanks; and good luck.

Here are some shots of the Graypaul cars when they used to be raced in the UK by Robin Lodge and Tony Merrick.

This is that car - Trentside Classics are Fiat Dino specialists and it's a 1959-type replica built around a 2.4 Dino engine. The wheels look too small and the body shape is wrong - I guess the insurance value, if true, represents the work he put into it.

The b/w picture is the Australian replica from 1992, another 1960-style car.

    So the world doesn't have a 1958-type car like Hawthorn's WDC winner - that's what I'd build if I had the money/skill.
