1959 Alfa Spider - $102,000.00 Seriously?

IF it were a 'veloce' model and this was a frothy auction, perhaps? Being a 50's example adds to rarity. When you see Lancia Aurelia Sp(y)ders ranging from $300k - $600k, these seem a reasonable alternative. There are outstanding Guilia/Gulietta Spider variant examples available for far less still as Alfa's values have languished in the present white hot vintage car market.

A best of the breed 'duetto' or round tail '69? Spider sold at auction this past year for upwards of $120k, so Alfa's are starting to get noticed.

 

It's customary among dealers in Italy to ask ridiculous prices. The seller appears to be outside Palermo.

IF this was a veloce and IF the restoration is as good as the photos, the price would be approximately market correct. It is a longer wheelbase 101 transition car, similar to the one I sold through Gooding more than two years ago for only $3k less. Earlier short wheelbase cars should go for more given their event eligibility.

But this is not a veloce. Genuine veloces carry a well-deserved premium of about 50% over so-called "normale"s.

The price mentioned above for Lancia Aurelia spiders understates the current market by a factor of two or three, although the later convertibles might be found in this range. But an Aurelia is considerably more rare, and much more car than a Giulietta.

 

My '59 101 Sprint was/is restored to the level seen on this spyder and is maybe a $60k car today in the US--stronger in Europe where they 'get' these cars. (Don't ask what I sold it for, it's depressing!). I think they're worth it--special cars. Rev happy 1.3, superb, confident handling and brakes (pretty finned drums), great noises, smells and looks.

I don't think this price is too far off but too much for me :>)

 

Excellent information...and I was on track for Lancia Aurelia 'convertible's' valuation, while 'Spyder's' with those sweet wraparound windshields are big money....appreciate the heads up. Do I have that right?

I think 'roundtail' spiders and even series 2 spiders - pre 1975 are still undervalued, and still earlier Guilia/Guilietta's are around for collecting.

 

Yes, all B24 Aurelias have almost tripled in price over the last 2-3 years, with the earlier spiders now more than double the value of the more comfortable but less pretty convertibles.

Seems a bit excessive, until you see a nice but not particularly special E-type go for $468k.

A solid B24 worths $250k, imho, adding the service and some works to do.
Eventually i saw in Padoa a car sold at €320k with wrong color and wrong upholstery. The market in Italy is out of standard actually...

Sure if it's a top notch restoration, I owned two nice 101 California cars with original interiors so I knew what it was suppose to look like, yet most of the restored cars I saw had incorrect upholstery, just saying.

 

What's a nice '67-69 roundtail worth?

 

The driving dynamics of the Duetto's are better, but both are a great drive. The best Duetto's are far less than 1/10th of a contemporary 275GTS, with 1/3 the cylinders. Both were among the final Pininfarina designs approved by Battista before he passed.

 

And the duetto's are prettier and more fun to drive!

A market correction will end up being 'last ones up, first to fall'. These Alfa's will fit that condition.

 

Yea there was some crazy bidding going on, I never thought i would see Montreal's going for those prices. All the lower priced cars seemed to take a big jump, that is sign. Good or bad I'm not sure.

The used / original 300 SL brought crazy money.

 

So what price on a 56 spider normale, never had any real rust, orgional factory weld dimples on bottom, very well kept, great repaint seats redone org carpet otherwise all there clean and great.

Or does the market only like restored coars betetr than factory.
