I have been browsing 365 GTC/4s for a possible purchase and since this will be my first Ferrari purchase, I don't want to blunder. What do complete PPIs typically cost with a leak down test?

$700-900 at an auth. dealer is the range I have seen, $200-300 less at a non Ferrari authorized dealer. Could be more or less for an older Ferrari though since I am referring to late model cars.

For a Vintage Ferrari forget about an authorized dealer. In your area I would call Norbert Hofer. The cost for a mechanical inspection may cost 800 to 1000 dollars. You may also want to have the body looked at. Trust me, it is worth it. Do not take a chance on getting a poorly maintained car. You may also want to find out who worked on it and who owned it in the past. Reciepts from a prior engine rebuild mean nothing if it was not done properly by an experienced shop. Keep in mind it cost the same to fix that car as a 15 million dollar 250gto. Take your time and don't let a pretty paint job full you. These cars are expensive to fix.

About $1000 to $1200 for a car of this vintage. Older cars run about $2,000 like 212's . The car must be inspected on a lift. Do not just have some guy look at the car in the driveway.

    I would agree 100%.

The C4 is a complicated car and to do a thorough inspection is a pretty big job.

In October '02, I paid about $200 for the PPI on my '64 330 2+2. It was good in the sense that it covered all the vital points. However, it didn't alert me to lots of $mall things...and if it had I may not have bought the car, and may not have bought a Ferrari at all. No regrets.

    Last year, I paid $500 each for two PPI's, first on a '65 330 2+2, then on my current '83 308.

These were thorough, top to bottom, with compression/leakdown tests, full photos, etc., etc.

Agree, high-reputation independents are the best for classic and vintage cars.

Do your homework, then as extensive a checkover as you are personally capable of, make sure you want the car, and then don't hold back for the PPI.

A 330 or a 308 is a far simpler car than a 365 GTC4. A better comparison would be a Daytona but the downdraft carbs and lack of power steering make that car easier to inspect as well.

I perform them fairly inexpensive in hopes that I land the new owner as a potential client. If I have to travel to do a PPI it is much more expensive of course. It can easily run $1000.

What? that is crazy! We typically spend 3 hours doing a pre-purchase inspection ($300), which includes a test drive, compression test and inspection of the car on a lift.

    There you have it!

    From two of the best.

To quote from Trading Places (loosely) "Mr. Shaughnessy has set the price. Tell our clients to buy PPIs at $400."

OK I over estimated the cost of an inspection. I figured a days labor. The fact is I did not have an inspection on the car I bought 5 years ago. I first saw the "show winning" car in person as it rolled off the truck after traveling 2000 miles. It was beautiful. The yellow paint shining in the sunlight. I started it up and oil and water were not dripping out, but spraying out of the engine bay. The car ran great but just had too leaks. To make a long story short I ended up doing a restoration on the car (see 275gtb returning to life thread). I got lucky because the market has gone up so I could justify the money I had to put into the car to make it right. If this had been a 365gtc/4 I would have been in trouble. In the end I basicly had a post purchase inspection that cost me about 150K.

So does anyone know of any privately owned 365 GTC/4s reasonably priced for sale? I do not want a project. Looking for a cosmetically restored driver.
