Considering the rusty condition of the body I would have thought the engine would have been the last thing to worry about ... it's just going to sit around for years while the body is rebuilt?

Also why the need to rework it?

    Hi Pete,

my daytime Job allows me to get small Projects done meanwhile i work, so i can do the Engine Job.
The Body is a lot of work about the corrosion , but i get help from a good Coachbuilder.
I remove still Parts and sort them in Boxes that i will find everything when i go to reassembling them.
My last Project takes me about 3 Years.....

For the Waterpump i have to rework it because it leaks a little and the Steelbearing will corrode so in a short time. Also it will turn a little hard , so i have to open it and see that the seal does not sit correct. This was just small Problems but it can gives you later Problems when you dont need it.

Hi! I just got into a Mistral restoration - something like what you guys are working on :) Mine is a 1966 piece and I cannot locate a few items which must be from other types of cars, such as:

    * dome light
    * the steel rods (?) that keep the hood open (don't know the right English name)
    * the water reservoir for windshield washer

    Any ideas?

well, frankly, I have not found anything yet. I am taking the engine apart. The Mistral has a strange head gasket with the brass (??) rings around the cylinders. How do you align them? The rings do not have any refrence points - how do you put back the head?

    Hi
Are going to remover the ally panels off the Chassis?
Alloy and steel dont like each other un lees there is a seperation of non conductive meterial between then.

The door skins I believe are ally and I have seen well meaning professionals repair alloy panels and put them straight over rusty steel structure. It lasts a bout 6 months.

It is very imports to address any areas of the chassis where Alloy panels attach to prevent the repairs and fresh paint it being hugh waist of money.

I have seen this exact thing happen to a Mistral here in Australia.

    Regards
    Graeme

I got some parts from Jacques as well, but import to Europe is hell of an expensive game. Italgasket is cheaper. I still have no idea of what will keep the rings on their place...

Mine has problems on the lower side of the doors, the hood around the hinges and some other places. I don't want to skin the car totally - the aluminium skin will have to be glued back to the restored steel part. The plastic glue that is used by e.g. Lotus with new cars, is insulating the alloy from steel to prevent further electrolitic corrosion.

Those brass fire rings are so confusing to people. *If you use great care in *each ring placement on top of the cylinder liner and use *care while lowering of the head you will have no problems. *I have done this several times with no issues.. *Maserati uses those rings and rubber gasket due to the large amount of movement, from thermal expansion, between the head and the block. When the original head gasket is used and installed properly it should last a long time. It provides very good water flow around the top of the cylinders and head.
