It seems Ferrari would not grant a Classiche on this car unless the body was fully redone. Is that correct?

(NB: the initials of the buyer are not RM).

    Correct.
It would be a sacrilege to renose the car back to short (as born) just for a certification.
This sort of car certainly DOES NOT NEED a red book. 5893 is one of the most famous Ferraris ever.

5893 could still potentially have been awarded a White Classiche Book as a Ferrari of Historical Interest with its Drogo nose.

It's cars like 5893 is what the White Classiche book is for, and they do have to meet strict criteria to be awarded. People believe that lesser cars get the White book or that a Red book is better than White but that really is wrong.

Is the car is good shape otherwise? Could it be driven at speed on the track if the new owner wished to do so?

The 250 LM would still try to kill you even if it was perfect.

of2worlds: I am puzzled by your statement. This has been discussed before on the forum. Correct suspension setup is important on the LM. Poorly setup, they can be very unstable at racing speeds. Correctly setup, our car is stable and very fast. Without doubt, things happen faster in an LM than a GTO, but they are still a stable platform for racing. The fact that many LM's were raced successfully by private owners is a testament to the car's drivability in racing conditions, and yes, I have quite a few miles behind the wheel of an LM.

Note 5901 that Joe Rosen had a problem with. Maybe the LM was not to spec in his case. You must be a cool dude because Ed's biggest complaint about the 250LM was how hot the cabin got!
But no less an authority than Enzo Ferrari said his race cars with the engine behind the driver should only go to his racing drivers.
I see a more fundamental problem being the diminished ranks of skilled mechanics with the Ferrari knowledge gained through hands on experience; like yourself.

of2worlds: You are correct about the heat in the cockpit. They do get hot. For me the biggest problem is the tight fit. I am 6' 4" and it is a job to just get in the car! I told Sue when we both are in an LM, we end up touching each other in places we have never touched before!
