1968 365 Gt 2 + 2 help needed -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have just bought a 1968 365 Gt 2 + 2 from the orignal owner. The car had not been started for about five years. It is my first ferrari so i am a complete rookie. Have managed to get the engine started. However it looks like i am going to have to do a lot more work before the car really becomes driveable. At the moment the engine lacks power, is smoking and missing, and after running it for a very short while the plugs become black.ihave several questions- 1.Is there a technical manual available which would help me with a rebuild? 2.can anyone recommend a parts source for an engine rebuild? (i have had several engines rebuilt but none were as complex-mostly mustang merc camaro cuda etc) 3.can anyone suggest a source for carbs, clutch and pressure plates? 4.is there a source for borrani type wire wheels? 5.the piano type switches on the centre cosole are missing.any idea where i could buy these?or would i have to have them made? 6.what is the body metal made of?as it appears to have no corrosion at all? 7.i also own some other classic cars-have replaced the points with a pertronix ignitor and have never had starting problems again-is something like this available for the 365? 8.is there a source for either nos or aftermarket parts for: a.interior parts such as door lock knobs and ferrules, rear view mirror, etc b.window and winshield rubber gaskets(would sofseal have a kit ?) c.other misc items such as the orignal horn, wipers, turn signal lights(front) any help at all would be greatly appreceated a.d.
congratulations, A.D. First, you need to go to www.tomyang.net and sign up ASAP. It is the technical home for those of us who work on our vintage Ferraris. there is a "suppliers" section of the site as well as the forum that will answer most of your questions. what is your serial number?
first of all congrats and welcome to the club as to your questions 1. no specific 365 tech manual but the 330 manual has all the specs for the engine with the eception of the piston size 2. Gt Car parts in Arizona or Rutlands in Atlanta 3. Pierce manifolds for carb part but new carbs are nearly impossible, Clutch and pressure plates are available from the above parts sources just make sure you get a V12 set and not a V8 set for obvious reasons 4. are you talking about restoring your Borranis if so Cork Adams is the man, if you want to buy a set of 4075's try Shaughnessy he usually has a set 5. the "piano" switches have been reproduced and are available although not cheap and depending or your car you will need to find a fuel pump switch and possibly an emergency flasher switch 6. hood and trunk are aluminum the rest is steel, the saving grace on the 365 is that the floos and trunk floor are made of fiberglass. 7. yes petronix has a setup but I hear you have to talk to the right guy when your ordering it so they know what your talking about if you contact me with a list of parts your looking for I can help you source them or tell you where to get them. I have a pretty good collection of interior bits and pieces but not new enjoy your new ownership and you are definately headed in the right direction in finding this and Tom Yang's site and asking the community for help Zac
AD Agree w BrianP, Tom Yang is a great connection, Zac and the whole gang is there for detailed questions like this, one point, you said the car has sat for 5 years, and you are going to rebuild the engine so why not drive it a bit, before you tear it down? Assuming its safe (brakes etc) you might be suprised as to what 500-1000 steady road miles might do. How many miles are on it now? Maintainence history?

Are one or more of the chokes engaged? Check by lifting the aircleaner top off and peer down the throats
Black smoke? It would seem like either your needle valves aren't closing or your chokes are on. +1 A little pumping of the loud pedal while cranking, is always enough to get my baby purring. Bill
I really, really, really do hope that it's just the carbs and plugs, but after sitting for five years, depending on how it was stored, it could be rusted rings and bores. (Personal experience). Tom Kizer
Tom: Good point, a bore scope of a couple of cylinders would be a wise thing to do, not all that difficult these days with the new technology. Michael Bayer
Before even thinking about a rebuild, I'd do a simple but thorough tune up. New plugs, wires, coils, rotor distributor caps; i.e. complete electrical redo. Then tackle the carbs: complete rebuild and tune. New fuel lines, rebuild/replace fuel pump. Try the car again; run at high RPMs a bit (Italian tune up). See what you have. If you're lucky, the car will surprise you and run really well. If it's not, now do a compression/leakdown and see what you get (doing it before the tune up may prove useless; running the car in will make bad numbers turn into good numbers sometimes). An engine rebuild should be the last thing to do. Unless you're made of money and want to start fresh! Ken
For a shot at a quick fix - clean the carbs and check that the chokes are open. After sitting 5 years, the carbs on most cars are gummed up due to the gas evaporating from the bowl. Many times (been there, done that) the float cannot shut off the flow of gas when the level comes up, so raw fuel is just pumped into the manifold, rather than metered. Result: black smoke - no power - black plugs. Sounds like super rich mixture. If it were rings, the smoke would be blue. Fortunately, the carbs are simple to clean up, as long as you don't get into syncronizing and balancing them The advice for a full tune up is good, but it might run pretty good for the interim with the right mixture. Cheers Warren
HI GUYS THANKS FOR ALL THE FEEDBACK I LIVE IN BOMBAY INDIA.I ALSO HAVE AN OFFICE IN NYC LONDON AND DUSSELDORF AND THEREFORE HAVE ACCESS TO PARTS PROVIDED YOU GUIDE ME FROM WHERE..... I AM CONVINCED THE CARBS ARE A REAL PROB AS THEY SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF "M SEAL" TO HOLD THE PCS IN PLACE... CONSEQUENTLY I HAVENT ALLOWED THE GUYS IN THE REPAIR SHOP TO GO ANYWHERE NEAR THE CARBS AS I AM AFRAID IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG THE CAR WILL SHUT DOWN... HOW DO I GO ABOUT EITHER BUYING REBUILT CARBS OR GETTING IT DONE MYSELF? YOUR HELP DEEPLY APPRECIATED CHEERS AD
ALSO, HAS ANYBODY TRIED FITTING A PERTRONIX IGNITOR KIT IN PLACE OF POINTS IN THE 365 GT 2 + 2? I HAVE HAD THESE FITTED IN SOME OTHER CLASSIC CAR PROJECTS AND THE RESULT IS TRULY OUTSTANDING-HAVE NEVER HAD TO CHANGE OR SET POINTS AGAIN AND THE CARS START IN HALF A TURN OF THE STARTER MOTOR.AND THE BEST PART OF ALL-IT FITS INSIDE THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP IN PLACE OF THE POINTS. WOULD IT BE ADVISABLE TO DO THIS ON THE FERRARI-HAVE ANY OF YOU TRIED IT?IF SO WHAT IS THE SPECIFIC PART NUMBER THAT I SHOULD ASK PERTRONIX FOR?DO YOU KNOW OF ANY STOCKISTS OF PERTRONIX IGNITORS FOR 12 CYL FERRARI'S?WOULD IT DIMINISH THE VALUE OF THE CAR IN ANYWAY?
A few things from experience. I hope that you oiled the cylinders well and manualy turned the engine over several times over the space of a few days before starting it. I also hope that you pulled the fuel tanks out and had them boiled out and fresh fuel before trying to start. The worst problem will be if you ran sour gas thru the system. If so, you will need a complete carb rebuild. This could be the problem with the plugs fouling badly.
PUT OIL THROUGH THE ENGINE FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND DRAINED AND REPEATED THE PROCESS TWICE-ALSO TURNED THE ENGINE OVER BY HAND UNTIL IT GOT "FREE"-PULLED OUT THE FUEL TANK HAD IT CLEANED THOROUGHLY ,CHANGED THE FUEL LINE ALSO CHANGED THE BRAKE LINE BRAKE PADS(REAR)-COULD NOT FIND FRONT BRAKE PADS-CHANGED THE BRAKE LINE AND BLED THE BRAKES ALL THIS BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE.... AS STATED EARLIER, NOW THE ENGINE WORKS BUT : lacks power, is smoking and missing, and after running it for a very short while the plugs become black.the carbs are the next point that i need to attend to: my questions- 1.can anyone suggest a source for REBUILT WEBER 40 DFI / 5 carbs or a carb rebuild kit 2.i also own some other classic cars-have replaced the points with a pertronix ignitor and have never had starting problems again-is something like this available for the 365?
use the 'search' function on the vintage ferrari forum (message board) on tomyang.net - including the archives - the pertronix adaptation to the Ferrari colombo v-12 has been discussed in depth several times there. If my memory serves, you need to call pertronix and get two, six cylinder kits - I believe they will also walk you through the process.
A.D. Congratulations on your purchase. I advise you to re-read all of the posts in this thread. All of your questions have been answered, especially look at Zac's post. I wish you much luck with your car. Just remember, it is hand built in very limited numbers, unlike the other vintage cars you mentioned. This means it is best to fix the parts you have as finding replacements can be difficult. I strongly recommend sending the carburetors to the vendor listed in one of the previous posts by Zac. Zac has restored several similar cars and has a lot of experience. I also recommend checking both of the fuel pumps. Finally, several members asked which serial number car you purchased. This is for two reasons: 1. because they are trying to keep track of the history of all of the early cars; 2. beacause Ferrari made running changes during the production run - if they have the serial number, they can advise of specific things to look for on your car. Regards, Art S.
Have people generally had good luck with Pierce? They rebuilt the carbs for my BB512, and while the end product was great, we had to do a tremendous amount of messing around to get them setup properly after we got them back from Pierce. I'd like to do the carbs in the 365 2+2, but after that experience I'm not all that sure I want to use Pierce.
I had the same problem having to completely set everything up after I got them back But they did a great job rebuilding them and essentially built one carburator from scratch. For the price it was very good. I just wasn't prepared for the condition that the finished product is sent out. Some explanation would have helped.
