This car met a somewhat similar fate, yet it survived. This 3.5 coupe was purchased in 2009 by the late Dennis Dammerman from vintage car collector Jim Taylor to be used as a 3.5 driveline donor for his numbers matching 1970 low nose 280SE 2.8 six Cabriolet. Dennis’ low nose 2.8 cabriolet went through a major rotisserie restoration and V8 conversion. The restoration was featured in Hemming’s S&E 2010 November 2010 see: Three-Pointed Perfection | Hemmings Motor News The coupe was carefully taken apart and documented. My father and I purchased the coupe and all of the left over remaining parts from Dennis’1970 low nose 2.8 cabriolet and re-commissioned the coupe as a low nose 2.8 six. It was a great way to save the car and to save the soul of the cabriolet driveline. A major service was done at this time and included a major suspension rebuild and restoration. All parts were sandblasted and refinished using single stage PPG paint. The engine & driveline received a comprehensive service. Parts replacement includes but not limited to the following: water pump, clutch fan, radiator recore, points, distributor cap, points, plugs, wires, fuel pump, fuel tank, transmission oil cooler lines, front and rear shocks, transmission shifter bushings. New Michelins are mounted on restored rims having been sandblasted and powder coated. The car received all new steel brake lines and new hoses along with new master cylinder and rebuilt brake calipers filled with dot5. The exhaust manifold has been sandblasted and refinished and the exhaust back is brand new. There is too much to list. During the re-commission the engine compartment was restored and the firewall padding replaced. The undercarriage including the driveline and suspension is like a show car. The seats, dash, front door panels and rear speaker ledge have all been previously replaced in leather. The carpeting and headliner are like new. The interior wood alone on these cars would cost in excess of $5000.00 to restore. The wood has already been restored and shows beautifully. The interior is excellent replacement costs on a W111 can be in excess of $10000.00. This one needs nothing. The body is rust free. Upon inspection the floors and rear trunk area remain original and rust free. Upon very close inspection I can that complete front and rear fenders were previously replaced (no sections). The rocker panels are rust free and believe them to be original. The paint is condition 3 and shows very well. The Mercedes W111 coupe series is very rare car and has style and build quality is second to none. This car offers itself as an affordable and reliable W111 that is also great long term investment. I have already carefully driven her over 4500 miles to ensure its reliable and ready for your driving enjoyment. An identical Cabriolet version of this car will normally bring at least 4 times my asking price. The W111 market continues to be on the rise. It would cost significantly more than my asking price to find a comparable matching numbers 2.8 coupe. I believe the 2.8 low coupes are rarer than the 3.5 coupes and easier to live with from a reliability and cost standpoint. This car is a true survivor with unique story. If you are stickler for a matching numbers car then this is not the car for you. We would love to keep her but we have too many cars so we are considering this sale. I have a serious attachment to this car because I love the W111 series and I have tons of money and sweat equity in this car so I respectfully ask for no low balls. Priced affordable and accordingly in today's market at $36500 or closest reasonable offer.
