SN 16553 is a 47k mile US spec car delivered thru the West Coast importer, Modern Classic Motors and sold to its first private owner in September of 1974. Originally delivered in Rosso Rubino with a silver/grey nose band, the car was repainted Rosso Chiaro in the early 2000's. Perhaps best known to Fchat members as Randy Gori's Daytona, over the 15 years that he owned the car he put very little miles on it but lavished the car with extensive servicing and restorative work, mostly with Continental Ferrari of Hinsdale, Ill. Indeed, receipts totalling approx. $150k document extensive work done within the last 1000 miles to make this Daytona look and run magnificently. It is now available as it's current owner just acquired a Daytona Spyder, and he thus feels this car is redundant.

    HISTORY

A Massini letter and communication with Ferrari Market Letter (FML) document the cars history from new. Purchased in September of 1974 by Dr. Warren Fox of Villa Park, CA, he would own the car until 1984 when he sold it to Donald Perrotta of Rancho Santa Fe, CA. Mr Perrotta would own the car until 1989 when he sold it to Grand Prix Classics of La Jolla, CA. It would then pass thru a couple of other dealers before being shipped to Europe and eventually being purchased by its next retail owner, Charles Zwolsman of the Netherlands. Infamously, Mr. Zwolsman would become the first chapter in this cars' rather dubious history by being convicted of drug trafficking and eventually murdered. Seized and held for 7 years by the Dutch government, the car was auctioned off and made its way back to North America, where it would come to reside in Evansville, IN with it's next owner, Mr. Robert Wright.

After owning the car for three years, it was then sold to Fchatter Randy Gori. Known as "Randy" on Ferrarchat, he clearly loved the car and information and pictures of the car in his collection can be seen over the years by searching thru old threads on www.ferrarichat.com. Unfortunately, Mr. Gori's long-term ownership of the car would end in 2020 with his demise documented on a Ferrarichat thread that we would all like to forget! Auctioned by RM at Amelia Island in 2021, it would be purchased by South Florida Exotics, LLC and re-sold over a year later after a failed bringatrailer (BAT) auction to it's current owner.

    BODY

Repainted Rosso Chairo in the early 2000's, the paint shows excellent, with an excellent gloss and no crazing, cracks, runs or other blemishes. It must have been a high quality job, as even to this day there is no evidence of overspray, rust bubbles, or other unsightly flaws, which is perhaps not too surprising given that the car has only covered some 1,000 miles since the repaint and was kept in Mr. Gori's climate controlled garage for most of those years. Additionally, the panel fit is excellent, the rubber trim has no cracking, and the glass has no chips or cracks with original etching marks. The chrome and polished metal trim is shiny with no pitting. The car also has 8 and 9" Borranis that have been refinished and are shod with 2022 date coded Michelin XWX's.

    INTERIOR

The interior presents immaculately, having been the recipient of extensive work by Continental Ferrari addressing nearly every aspect of the cockpit, from the dash to carpets, seats, and various trim panels. The center console was recovered, new door panels with new speakers and door window channels and cables were fitted. Window motors were rebuilt and new felt channels for glass were installed. The rear parcel shelf was recovered in black as well as the interior trim over the rear wheel tub and door sills. The Daytona seats were re-trimmed with correct materials and show no rips or tears and even the bolsters show very little wear. The dash has been recovered with material from Henk, and the fit and finish is excellent. Of course, new carpets were installed to pull everything together and make the cockpit a very luxurious and inviting place to spend a few hours at a time eating up miles on a cross-country journey, if one so desired!

    MECHANICAL

The car has had extensive engine work within the last thousand miles to ensure that it runs as well as it did when originally leaving the gates of Maranello. It had an engine out service to fix oil leaks, including the front timing chain cover, camshaft seals, rear main seal and cam cover gaskets. The shift shaft seal was replaced, the carburettors rebuilt, and the car enjoyed an extensive electrical tune-up, having two new dinoplex ignition boxes installed along with new plugs, wires and a battery. A new clutch, throwout bearing and pressure plate were also installed along with new engine and gearbox mounts. A new water pump, coolant hoses, a thermostat and radiator recore ensures the car no longer overheats. Additionally, the engine sounds as good as it runs, having recently had the exhaust headers repaired and ceramic coated as well as a new ANSA exhaust installed.

New brake rotors and pads on all four corners as well as new brake hoses and vacuum lines ensure the car stops on a dime! Handling wise, the car has had all the shocks rebuilt, new ball joint seals, and various suspension bushings replaced. The CV joints were also renewed and the shifter box was rebuilt.

    SUMMARY

This Daytona would make an excellent driver whose new owner would be proud to display, and at the same time, have no hesitation using the car to reliably comple long distance rallies and tours. A litany of receipts documenting extensive refurbishment should give the next owner reassurance that he can jump into the car today and use the car as Enzo intended, that being as a continent crushing, high speed GT car. In addition to the receipts going back some 20 years, the car comes with a tool roll and a Massini letter. While one may be able to find a cheaper Daytona, I doubt one can find an example as mechanically "ready to go" and as presentable as this car, which is realistically priced at 599k obo! Oh My Gosh !! Memories. I went for a job interview at the Ferrari Store in Santa Ana, Ca. the latter part of 1976. Before being hired, my potential future boss, Barry LeFave, said to me before hiring me, " so you think you know your stuff, see that Daytona there, remove, overhaul, install and tune the carbs on that Daytona" . I followed instructions, and Barry was ecstatic with the results, and hired me on the spot as the lead mechanic and general service manager. Later that next day, Dr. Warren Fox came to pick up his car, and after a road test, told me that was the best that his Daytona ever ran! I do fondly remember that car !

The silver nose band is on the Massini letter and more importantly, I have pictures of the car in its original color and it had the silver band. Perhaps Gary can confirm or deny this based upon his knowledge of the car and having worked on it for its first owner.

And I agree - it doesn’t have any smog equipment. In fact, the main reason the car is priced at only 599k, which is cheap if someone wants an excellent driver that looks good, is because to get it to concours level it would need all the smog equipment and side marker lights re-installed. Also, it has no set of books as well. Those are the 3 negative issues that we took into consideration when pricing the car.

Drew, I think when it was in Europe and color changed to Rosso Chiaro is when they removed the side marker lights - probably to make it look more “European”

I am giving a lot of thought to if the car had a silver nose on it 48 years ago, but I can't quite remember, guess I'm getting old and losing it! I typically service about 400 Ferrari's and Lambo cars per year at Bobileff Motorcar Company, so lets see, that would make about 19,200 cars ago ? Nope, can't remember, yep, that proves I'm losing it !

As a North American delivery, the "silver nose band" was the plexi covered headlights??
Or perhaps a paint trim, to emulate them.

Poor Randy, actually a lot of us take that as a very cautionary tale...

    GLWS!
    Looks fantastic in this color..

Sad to see this but perhaps I should buy it - he loved buying cars and driving them everywhere.
