I was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with these models of 911. I was looking for feedback on driving impressions and also problem areas. From information I have gathered it seems that 74 was a year to stay away from so I'm figuring like most cars the last year of a model run is the best so that would be 77. I have studied up on the 964/993 series so I'm familiar with some pro's and cons of the later 911 but an earlier model is more in my budget and I would like for my next car to be something more raw and also something I can tinker with. I'm shying away from the 73 and earlier models as I'm figuring there will be more of a chance that the older the car the lesser chance of finding a 'relatively' rust free vehicle. T.I.A.

had a '77 911. It had, as I recall, mechaincal fuel injection. It also had some nasty thermal reactors on that served like a catylitic converter.

Took them off, car ran real well. It did suck some major engine parts out at about 50,000 miles, requiring, at the time, about an eight hundred dollar repair. No small change for me in 1980.

It was tail happy, like all 911's of that era, but it was a blast to drive.

The A/C sucked, the heat worked, sort of, but, still, it was a good car.

That entire era of 911 is cheaper, they aren't considered as reliable as the ones before (carbs) or after (better injection)

    Good luck.

That entire era of 911 had its share of problems, but if you can find a 1977 (first year of complete rust protection) together with a properly rebuilt motor (case savers or time certs) together with the Carrera tensioners and popoff valve improvements car should be good to go and are very good used values as long as the work was properly done.

Rennlist and Pelican Parts are the best sites to check out.

In addition, Peter Morgan's book on 911s is a great guide to the models.

DON'T buy one older than 76, unless you check everywhere for rust.
that was the first year they zinced the bodys.
1975 and older can have rust problems.
1976 and newer have very few rust problems.
Those years your talking about have stud problems.
Can be very spendy, so take the valve covers off and
look for broken studs. Deffinetly get a P.P.I.

Interesting choice - I'd have considered the SCs, which seem to be pretty strong. I've had a couple 964s and love them, lots of aftermarket pieces out there. As you've already discovered, the '74-'77s have been the topic of endless discussion in Porsche circles, a lot has been written about the cars. I agree, check rennlist, excellence, panorama, etc.

Good luck, all are loads of fun and can be made quite fast.
