Benefitting from never being driven in wet or winter conditions, the red finish and exterior brightwork on this 450SL show well. Aside for a repaint in the factory color 13 years ago, all components are original. Per the owner, all lights -which show clear lenses – operate properly, there is no rust on the car and the color-keyed hardtop has always been stored indoors. An interesting design feature is the lower body ribbing. Developed via wind tunnel testing, it is a functional element that serves to prevent dirty water splashed up by the wheels from reaching the side windows.

Factory wheel covers with color-matched centers, which show paint cracking, are wrapped in 14” tires that were replaced about one month ago. Quad headlights and 5-mph bumpers, front and rear, denote this 450SL as a US-spec vehicle. The black convertible top is rarely used, per the seller, and is shown both opened and closed in the gallery. Areas of note on the soft-top include frayed seams, a small tear in the passenger side plastic window and paint blemishes around the latching mechanism for the rear bow.

Aside from an added Bluetooth stereo, the interior is as original as the exterior with ivory upholstery extended to the dashboard and soft-top liner. The power windows operate properly as does the removed factory radio, which is included in the sale. The original 4-spoke steering wheel frames a clear instrument panel cover with VDO gauges for coolant temperature, fuel level, oil pressure, 160-mph speedometer, 7,000-rpm tachometer and clock.

Seating surfaces show wear and wrinkling as does the passenger door panel along with staining and cracking on the center console. As detailed in the gallery, there is a chip in the driver’s side doorsill cover and the convertible top shows wrinkled sections with haze on plastic window surfaces. The original owner’s manual, factory documentation and a Hayne’s repair manual are all included with the sale.

Driving the rear wheels through a 3-speed automatic, the M117 4.5L V8 motor is part of the all-original powertrain that made 190 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque when new. Featuring Bosch fuel injection, it shows 136,233 miles on the odometer. The most recent service was this past spring and included an oil change and flush of the brake and transmission fluids.

Located in Lexington, Ohio, the seller has added 2,000 of the 136,233 miles during six months of ownership. It was purchased from the second owner in southern Ohio who owned it for 15 years, during which the car was restored and repainted. With its lovely red paint job, V8 power and the promise of wind-in-your-hair fun, this 1974 450SL is ready for your next weekend drive.

$13K may be a tad high but if it runs well, but its in the ballpark. This model is certainly a beautiful car.
