Time for me to install a new set of tires on my stock 7 1/2x14 wheels and I want to know what size best/closest replicates the original size from the factory. Is it 205/70R-14, 225/60R-14 or ??? I'm not particularly interested in pure performance but rather in best all-around service.

The tire that most closely replicates the factory fitted Michelin XWX is the Michelin XWX. Still available in the factory specified 205/70R-14 from Coker in the US or Longstone Tires in the UK. After that you can search TireRack for something that fits if that's all you care about.

The XWX is a great tire but expensive. An option that looks great and performs well on a driver is the BF Goodrich Radial T/A same 205/70/R14 mounted white lettering inside looks just like an XWX from 10 feet and the tread pattern is very similar. Cost 1/5th of the XWX.
