I think its time they replace the space shuttle. I'm sure by now they make something that doesn't require so much attention.

I seem to recall reading an article a couple years back that there were NASA personnel buying up 286 and 386 processors for the space shuttle, because that's what it runs on.
    Can you imagine?
I guess that's what you get when you get a bureacracy bogged down in red tape to build something.

"It was not immediately clear why the cover — which was held by tape — came loose."

That duct tape is marvelous stuff, ain't it? ;)

I'm familiar with those tiles. My Grandfather retired from Rockwell and had a degree in Chemistry with a focus on radiation and ceramics, so guess what he worked on? I was blessed with being able to see a retired shuttle up close and personal when I was younger.

Back in the day, their thermal properties were nothing short of amazing. I bet they're still using them if they are on 286/386 processors. LOL!

Don't laugh at those old processors. They can still process the data from the coal feeding chute sensors inside the shuttle as good as anything currently available.

Maybe NASA should ask Burt Rutan, He is already working on SS3, his version of the shuttle

A window cover fell off knocking some tiles off on the way down.

They just "did not fall off"

    Delayed again. Faulty fuel sensor.

    This is becoming a joke.

I remember reading a Popular Science a few years back saying that they only have 486 computers on those shuttles. Why? Because they spend so much money making special cases to protect the computer motherboard components and hard drive from things that could mess it up in 0 gravitiy that keeping up with technology was out of the question.
I doubt they upgraded considering a new shuttle will be in use soon.

Three? Really? I guess that means the SS2 design is off his desk. Any idea when the public rollout is?
