Good luck with the smog test. Too bad the laws are so ridiculous.
How the heck did you get the air injection assembly into the front bank? I thought you would have to pull the engine. Is there actually room to work in there?
To be honest I'm having it all done by a restoration specialist. But I know he did not have to pull the engine. I'll be sure to ask him tomorrow.
Stupid question: when you bring a non-California emission spec (30+ year old) car into CA you have to convert it to CA spec? The answer is obviously yes because that's what you're doing. But...wow. In Connecticut we are lucky that 25+ year old cars are exempt. But we do have harsh winters...no one gets it all! John in CT.
It goes into the head, above the rear header. Lots of access, if you remove the RH fuel tank, roll the header out of the way, in that direction, unbolt the engine mounts and by jacking the motor slightly....... Easy!!!
They want "the stuff that came on the car, and working" is the best way to summarize it, to my understanding....
Yes. I wish there was an exemption because it isn't an easy undertaking. There is talk of making older cars exempt if they fail the test but the smog equipment must still be on the car.
I took all this stuff off my 77 years ago. As I recall, the air injection pump was used on a Buick so should be findable. Trying to recall if one pump or two. Anyone? Philip
Yes, there's definitely a GM equivalent for the air pump - it's in the 308 Parts Cross Reference thread, IIRC.
We seem to have hit a snag. The diverter valves don't work and passing smog has been a bit of a trial. Any suggestions on where to get new diverter valves for the emissions system are appreciated.
Thanks everyone for the tips and advice. We passed the California smog test and are officially street legal. Now I have to brave the line at the DMV...
1975 and later cars need to be smog compliant. Vintage stuff... they don't care. As of now it's not a rolling date, so any 308 GTB/GTS needs to be correct and US spec. Congrats on getting the car back to spec. I haven't had to face that challenge, but finding the original equipment and setting it up can't be easy.
Why not register your car in AZ. No smog check needed as it's classed as 'historic', therefore no need to take it back to AZ each year..... Just asking ;-)
