This car just showed up on the SF Bay Area Craigslist, but rather than link to the CL ad here's the link to the website local consignment outfit, Specialty Sales, that has got the car. http://www.specialtysales.com/car.php?carnum=4472 Asking $34,900. The pictures show a very clean driver, probably a #2. The seller has 88 photos available, but below is the money shot for Cali shoppers:

That's pretty cool. How much more would a 5 speed late model 400 go for in similar condition?

I spoke to Specialty last week and the MECHANIC that had to work on the car to get it running well.

First know that the odometer HAS turned over so its about 125Kilomters(so the approx. 78K on the ad is correct). The current owner has it there on consignment as all the cars at this place are on consignment.

I spoke to Johanes at Dino Motors; he aid the car overall is nice, but came in running very rough. Some attention to the floats,(carbs) etc and it is running fine now. He did not do a PPI so to speak so he has no idea about the A/C, radio etc. THe interior is well maintained and the paint is ncie but has some areas like any car that age.

They are supposed to be getting some records from the owner to see what has been done; my immediate concern would be the timing chain maintenance.

I am very much interested in the car BUT based on what you guys have shared and educated me on I think the price would be more like under $30K, there are 2 other autos with half the mileage for less, that seem to be in as good order as this one....will keep you posted. Doc

I had forgotten all about the previous Craigslist efforts with respect to this car (even though it was *I* who furnished several updates to the previous thread, each time the car was re-listed on CL). At that time the car was located in Monterey, but now it's in Redwood City, at the northern end of Silicon Valley. This prior history is interesting in light of the Specialty Sales copywriter's effort to create some false urgency with the comment "Since the current owner is already starting to have seller’s remorse over this stunning automobile, we suggest that you act quickly if you’d like to add it to your collection." I guess the seller's feelings of remorse have been very slow in building.

The market, and hence the sample size, is too small to state a specific number. It is generally accepted that a 5 speed would command a higher price than an auto, all else being equal. With good reason. In addition to the fun-to-drive factor, as a practical matter the autos are desperately in need of both a ratio between 1st and 2nd and an overdrive top gear. But as far as a dollar amount, my guess is that the 5 speed would bring a $3,000 premium. At the same time, because the marketplace has repeatedly shown that the '77 in this thread is not worth the asking price of $34,900 USD, the same car with a 5 speed probably would not go for this much money either.

This is the most accurate statement on pricing 400 series Ferraris.

In my ten years of watching this market closely: FEW TRADE. Some of that few are wonderful cars. Some are average cars. Some are trouble waiting to find a new owner. Wonderful cars in the 400 family can trade between 25K and 60K. Average cars can trade between 15K and 45K. The troubled ones can trade between 8K as parts or doner car level and somewhere just less than top of average.

All these are dependent upon motivation of buyer and seller. Some have paid good money for trouble. Do your homework as every 4xx is very different.

Thanks. I'm just starting to track the 400s in Aus.

I agree that 5-spd carb cars are worth more, but maybe thats only because I have one. After driving a number of different models I probably would have paid quite a bit more for one. My take on these cars is that you find a color combo that you love then prepare for a LOT of work to fix differed maintenance. Don't write off the autos either!
