I recently had the clutch cable snap so replaced that which was straight forward enough. But never noticed this. This is the first real drive I’ve taken since the cable snapped so hard to believe this has just worn through.

You should put a short section of rubber coolant hose over the aluminum tube in that area (in fact, you should have a bunch of short sections of rubber coolant hose in a lot of places to make sure that the aluminum tubes touch nothing else nor each other -- even a nylon cable tie can wear thru those soft aluminum tubes).

Mine where anodized so i had to clean that off around the hole to get good welds. Mine are all kinds of modified.

Too many decades removed from my 308 ownership to remember details about that mechanism -- but I can remember that there was a piece of coolant hose already on that coolant pipe on my ex-308 when I bought it in that area to protect it. The whole powerplant does move around some under accel/decel so just looking at it at rest may not give the whole picture. Also, the location of that coolant tube is rather variable depending on how the clamps are tightened (i.e., how that tube is rotated) and the lengths of the pieces of coolant hose on each end.
