Thanks for the nice write-up Bryan. Look forward to you getting out for a drive. Hutch The World's First All-Electric Ferrari - Gear Patrol ....On a side note on the F308's cousin project.... The 124... any rubber that old has to go... new bushings all around for the 124... well for that matter suspension components while the hands are dirty.... May as well make it better than new..... debating over motor and power options but looking like a lot of range (120-180m) and decent power (2-3x) vs OEM. Thread location TBD for this build.... Testing and other performance stats on the GTE pending time on the "closed" road... Working on that for you. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looks like the GTE may be burning laps on April 1 in the Long Beach circuit the day before Formula E races. (Not a prank ) Also whatever misc parts are left over from the project or resulting from the project are no reserve action items 7 days: http://stores.ebay.com/OnoHutch Not much really but wanted to make mention.
What would it cost to do that Fiat? I'm looking at one right now that needs a bit of a nine work so you got me thinking "why bother -- go EV"?
Had the pleasure of meeting Hutch and driving his creation last week. They have done an awesome job on this project as the pictures show. I literally felt like a teenager getting behind the wheel for the first time ... what was I to expect? It was an awesome experience as one can imagine with three huge electric motors powering her down the road and the engineering that has gone in to the beast! I also took Hutch for a ride in my 308 so he could compare my "ultimate" suspension and Hayubusa throttle body set up vs. what he is running. I'll let Hutch comment on the difference from the passenger seat, but I think Hutch was impressed by the cornering ability of these cars with good shocks and swaybars .... even with the tiny 16" factory tires sizes . He's got tons of fun things to tweek on with his car, and I just gave him a few more . In a way we have both done the same thing to the 308... making it all that it can be with modern "widgets" while keeping the skeleton (chassis and suspension geometry) stock, only his team did it with electric motors, and I did it with the stock Ferrari "heart". I was hoping he would let me autocross it this weekend with the local Porsche club but unfortunately he's out of town . Thanks again to Hutch for letting me drive his rig and congratulations on a job well done! cheers
Ok that was really fun! Thanks for having me out to your shop Luckydynes amongst the windy roads and hanging out for a couple hours (and the amps from your 220 shop supply). Really glad you got to get some wheel time into the GTE. Some good tips were well imparted. Your track 308 cornering was ridiculously sticky and pulled some good G's in the Avo groves! The track alignment camber and suspension upgrades (metal bushings, upgraded sway bars, and spring/shock combo was way less "hard" of a ride than I would have expected. Rather nice comfortable ride in comparison to the total lack of body roll. Sounded nice, tweaked and tuned to run fast. Nice to see you driving that in the AutoX and we will have to connect on that. Thanks to you I now have a fabrication (car work vacation) date with our friends at Strategic Racing Designs to design/fab a new sway bar package..... And then the obligatory alignment adjustments of course. Looking forward to next weekend too.... GTE will be at the e-Village 2 of Long Beach Formula E Grand Prix Fri April 1 - 4-7pm (+\-) and all day Saturday..... Too bad its only a couple parade laps but will be time soon enough W Current batt config (low end range test) driving from pack top to bottom on 28.5 kWhr at 75 mph avg. is 70 miles. All power systems incredibly stable under a straight range confirmation run.... Controller and motor temps very cool leaving lots of room for "heavy demand" driving. Next up will be "city" driving which will be a higher range number. (Not to mention pack config upgrades in planning: range and power boosting). Happy Motoring and Easter weekend.
Thanks to the Long Breach Grand Prix Association for sponsoring our visit to the eVillage at the Formula E Races this weekend. Jehu Garcia got a nice video together and posted this am! Check it out.... The Ferrari on the track and even a spin out in the chicanes... whoops.... https://youtu.be/R-R92m_x-rk Hutch
Wanted to bring the "roll" under tighter control so off to see our friends at SRD again. What to do for that front end..... easy. Picked up a new 1 1/4' diameter bar for $180... custom length to fit.... hollow steel rated at 188w with 48 spine/ends. Bar fits perfectly into the existing OEM brackets with new Delron bushings. Whipped up some custom arms to connect the stock sway bar link rods and upsized the bolts to 5/8" from 12mm stock. Came out really nice and about 3x stiffer... Testing for a bit before circling around to address the rear bar.... So far the the handling is showing incredible improvement. Dialing in for Re-Fuel! Saw you in Hemmings Eric. Nice job. Four-Links ? electric Ferrari, electric cabover, GMC Twin Six, fastback Grand | Hemmings Daily
Cool... Thanks Mark.... I had not seen that yet. For a little of our sneak thoughts..... We are looking into upgrading to a 60kWhr TeslaS pack to increase both range and battery stiffness (more amps). The motors can still handle about 600-700 more amps than currently being fed under max acceleration. 140-190 mile range for a trade off of about +150 lbs over current configuration/weight. Love it the way it is now but that would make it "ludicrous" as they say . Engine Swap Depot did a nice write up and linked to FC thread. The Electric Ferrari ? Engine Swap Depot Torque News too: A Fire-Damaged Ferrari 308 GTS Is Reborn - Torque News
Interesting thread discussion over in 458 Forum! http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/458-italia-488/519815-electric-torque-vs-gasoline-hp.html
There is a time to reflect upon a project and this photo summary really represents a great appreciation of everything car past and present together... Lots of work to date and now for some fun on the pavement. Here is a driving video of the car just posted today.. https://youtu.be/GqMIIqqBCrU We are heading to Laguna Seca Re-Fuel Electric Car Races on May 22... Prior to leaving, we are swapping out the rear sway bar Monday, followed by rubber changes, and a full alignment with track camber... We will be in the SF South Bay Area May 20 at 1600 Amphitheater Dr, May 21st 10-2 visiting our Google friends and then cruising Monterey on Saturday with ReFuel Races on Sunday at Laguna Seca. Happy to visit and travel around saying hello.. Feel free to reach out. Wow... What a transformation Hutch ! When I started to read the thread I was quite sceptical to be honest. A non-petrol Ferrari !?!? Great piece of engineering, car looks wonderful. Not yet used to youtube-videos of a Ferrari without sound.. Well, I guess beïng able to drive around without having to be nervous about belts/sodium valves/oil pressure and "new" disturbing noises can be both intoxicating ánd relaxed.. Great job. All the best on the track !!
Amazing transformation and all first class work too! The Cavallino on the steering wheel needs some lightning bolts somewhere, but I am not sure having them come out of his **s would be appropriate, lol! See you in a couple of weeks, Hutch! Can't wait to see and drive your awesome creation. Alden
Lots of articles were circulating on blogs so we did a press release this week. Some fun reading. Obviously articles vary as do opinions but its cool to see the attention and the discussions. Autoblog: http://www.autoblog.com/2016/05/04/electric-ferrari-308-gts/ Another: http://www.autoevolution.com/news/marchionne-eat-your-heart-out-the-world-s-first-electric-ferrari-unveiled-107192.html There are over 50 in the last few weeks and too many to lIst. CNN even posted but too bad they mistook the battery pack for the power output. Woops! They got that part way backwards. Will post some of the others later. We made sure to call out the support if the natural place for the build: Ferrarichat. Best ever as I have met so many good people, new friends, and received endless amounts of support and feedback. Happy Cinco dr Mayo
Sorry if this is a repeat question. Was the Cavallino on the steering wheel not placed straight up on purpose?
There is news and then there is Jalopnik. Guess who we want to execute performance testing? The World's First Electric Ferrari Ditches The V8 For Tire-Crushing Electric Motors
Thanks, that looks much better. Jalopnik. Brilliant deductions from some brilliant astute individuals, well they must be right it was on the Internet.
A cool photo from last week... The upgrade on the front roll bar was so dramatic that it mandates proper upgrades in the rear. Rubber is already toast (2500 miles and a little fun)... new rubber, Resizing & ride height adjustments set for Monday. Adjustments to camber and alignment to follow. Reach out if you are in the Monterey / Santa Cruz area on Saturday... We will be about and about on Saturday. All day in San Jose on Friday (Google and Youtube campus visits to some friends) and the off to Laguna Seca camping on the track Friday evening. Will post info on the mods and rubber... with pics. Some good mods, adjustments etc to report as we prepare to head north on Thursday! 1. Downsized and threw on some new Potenza RE-11's all around. aspect ration dropped car about 3/4 inch. 235s (40) rear 215 (45) front. We got about 2500 miles on the first set of tires. At least they are still good for some more burn outs so up on the shelf they went. 2. Perfecting the alignment with a hair less than normal toe in for reduced rolling resistance. 3. QA-1's adjusted lower. Nice fit with the smaller rubber and with both sway bars on, we can get a tight fit without rolling into fenders. 4. Fabricated and installed rear roll bar... Pics there later as we have some minor adjustments to make in its positioning. 5. Cut and installed air vent hole grills seeing as the dragon no longer breaths fire. They came out really nice. 6. Could not resist the CA Legacy Plates. (Bring back the Grizzly bear)! Ride height and body alighment coming together nicely. What a great day today running with EV's at Laguna Seca. The GTE was 3rd. 1st in Daily drivers in the conversion lineup! Discover Channel sent a crew to cover the event for a show segment in Daily Planet Canada. We had a blast running. Best of all, testing the suspension mods and pushing the E Drive train to the limit for extended periods. The car runs on rails and that on a flat alignment w no toe-in.... It was clearly the oldest car in the lineup in all fields! Some cool photos. We just got back from the Bay Area and will have some cool updates, photos, and video's. Met with other FC folks and have some cool footage later tomorrow. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
NICE !! Isn't Laguna Seca the track with that famous "corkscrew" ?? Some onboard action in this part of the track would be really cool...
