Had a great time with the 308 crew in Carmel Valley at the VRBO. So happy it had a 30 amp dryer outlet we used every night for a full charge after 40-120 miles of daily driving! Thanks to Ace Hardware, a little appliance pig tail fit right into the anderson connector kit on board!

Cheers to the boys Yo and Brain for their Platinum 308/28 awards! Pleasure to meet so many new car guys! Ferrari Owners Club and Mike were awesome at the Barn Yard after Concorso Italiano. The Casa de Ferrari was a great place to meet people, test drive cars, and appreciate cars!

Baja Cantina? Well that was fun too....... Thanks Mark, Clint, Yo, Rob & Brian! Good times. A few photos attached.

    Good fun indeed.

GREAT to have met you and to have seen your famous car. Thanks for the personal tour. Pretty. Darned. Cool. ... Although your jury-rig dryer connection might have benefited from a touch more electrical tape as insulation.

Sorry I couldn't find time for a test drive opportunity despite your generous offer to do it.

... I am sure I have lots of cool pictures too, but I took so many I am still sorting through them.

Hutch, Thanks again for showing me all around the 308 EV during Concorso Italiano, including opening it up to show both battery packs and that awesome motor system. I absolutely love that you were able to save a 308, preserve it's beauty, and make it into a torque monster in the process.

    Cheers!

    Hey Hutch,

I'm back from the black hole...

Wish I could have been in Monterey to see you debut. I'm sure you had crowds swarming around your car.

I'll be down in your neck of the woods over Veteran's day w/e. Let's hook up. I still want my turn at the wheel of your creation :)

    See you soon.

Hutch, could you ball park the cost of a conversion like this. I know your team did a lot of custom machine work etc.

Whats the street price on a conversion like this if someone already had the car?

thanks for sharing along the way! Awesome project.

Some fun footage.... Laguna Seca in the 308 EV....

BTW... I have had a May 78 308 GTS in stored condition hitting BaT next week at a reasonable reserve. Likely needs rings and a lot of love but such a good car I would prefer to see this go to restoration as opposed to higher value parts thus the BaT approach. It is an entire car in storage since 93 with 77k miles. Worn but mechanically unmolested. All systems operational in decent condition. BaT will have all the photos (50+). Link will reposted when we go live next week.

    Happy motoring.

Finally getting to response on the back log of emails and questions.... More press and work has been over whelming my time!

    Regarding the 308 EV project:

Restoration, upgrade/mods, and EV conversions are the 3 categories that are part of the process here vs "conversion". With that said, why convert a car without the total restoration and proper build to substantiate the investment. The car really is not worth a conversion alone as the suspension, electrical (12v) system and the "while you are in there" stuff generates a new car through and through worthy of the EV conversion cost. I would say $75-$100k conversion and the balance restoration and upgrades. Obviously can pair down a lot toward stock and save $. I can pick about $25-40k off the top in performance items that are "optional". racing sway bars, LSD, wheels, racing brakes w floating rotors, QA1's, LED lighting, painting/body, interior etc. You could convert a car @ $125 +/- with the 150 MPC range today.

It is by no means a "kit" unfortunately. We are in with 2nd gen battery pack which has 150 mile + range (add 20 miles per hour of charge time) and the pack stiffness increases performance to sub 5 seconds 0-60 with minimal weight gain). Cost of the 1st EV 308 car minus time and a lot of freebies from our suppliers is @$175k. The new batteries offer a much "stiffer" performance with little output sag in voltage. The result is immediately available at the pedal. We now have 1800 amps of 165 volts available to the 308ev. Soon as we finish, we will turn this over for certified road and speed testing. The fun increases.

Once the motors are in the car, the future performance will come from changes in the battery pack which is modular by design. It can be upgraded for the life of the car to benefit from dropping battery cost, increased range, better tech, density increases, etc. We already have 3 really good battery options surfacing in the past 6 months with LG and Tesla packs. And with he influx of EV's the savage market will unleash a torrent of batteries for our use!

    Shoot any questions over.

This has been in the garage way too long and as much as I want a restoration project, I have my hands full! It really should be restored. So it has been pulled from storage and had an inspection/light service/clean up at the garage. Sure needs work and a home so it goes on BringaTrailer.com for auction this coming week.

The good, the bad and the ugly: Car/Motor runs but in need of appropriate attention from long term storage. Rings....? Compression is low all around from storage... 60 +/-1 psi 1-8. No water in oil. All fluids serviced (flushed) and changed (without leaks). New battery dropped back in & 12 v system is functional: gauges, lighting, windows, air horn needs oil etc. Seals and glass good. Brakes functional. Gear box & clutch functional. Fuel system functional (all new hoses). Cooling system functional. Straight frame. Clear title. 77k commensurate with photos. Worn interior & exterior. Not CA smog worthy.

I'll be watching for it Hutch, thanks for taking the time to talk with me about it last week. I'm currently watching the other 308 on BAT that ironically is also in the San Diego area. It also looks like it will need some TLC as it has 105k miles on it. I'm not afraid of a project but I'd prefer a car that I could drive and restore a bit at a time.

When you say "not CA smog worthy" do you mean it was a 49 state car that was never sold or registered in California or that it's just missing some of the equipment?

EDIT: never mind I saw the picture of the data plate. I guess you simply meant it's in no condition to pass a smog test.

BTW I just finished reading this entire thread. Wow, what a saga. Very impressive. I can understand why you've decided to abandon this second project after all you've gone through. Time to take a rest and enjoy driving your GTE.

Looks like some of the big boys are seeing the light (electricity...get it).

Personally, electric racing is a part of the future. Can't say that it will overtake IC racing, but definitely a place for it.

Audi has thrown in their hat, BMW said it will join when the swapping cars thing is gone, Ferrari has publically expressed interest. I've heard MB is looking into it. All looks promising.

Back to the 308 GTE (EV)...
Was down in SD last w/e for a wedding and hooked up with Eric. What a great dude. Texted him that day and we hooked up the next morning...even pulled him away from the Brazilian GP. We met for breakfast and then took the GTE out for a spin. Great uncluttered roads back there. My first time actually driving the GTE. It is very well sorted out. The power and performance is similar to my slightly modded (lowered, 17" staggered wheels, carb'd with Electromotive ignition, euro cams, Magnaflow exhaust). With a higher capacity battery pack, it would definitely be quicker. The motor was very tractable and the experience was not that different from my car. I've invited Eric to drive my GTS anytime he is up in the Santa Barbara area.

Please contact me if you have any questions about the GTE and/or want more comments.

    Henry

Happy New Year..... not planning to be in New York for Formula E this year but.... We did just have a fun film shoot with the Formula E related crew from UK in Las Vegas.... They are shooting for promo of the $1M prize competition between Formula E Drivers and Top gamer drivers that happened at CES.... The video will be out in a week or two and will post a link....

Noteworthy that Formula E driver and (and Ferrari's F1 Test driver) Jean Eric was the driver and his team mate Ma was in the final scenes.. At least I can say Elvis has been in the car as well as a LV show gal.

When we set out on this project we planned on advancing battery tech so the time has come to install a high performance battery system to compliment the motor package. The new cels will enable us to confidently performance test (3rd party) the car which should prove exciting. After 5,000 miles of driving over the past 11 months, it is of interest to strip, inspect, and re-deliver the project.

I pulled the 28.5 kWhr pack out (617 lbs). ItThe new pack provides 40.5 kWhr in that same 617 lb but I am aiming for the new pack to be 46-53 kWhr for a 125-150 mile range (assuming no intermittent charging). The new cels have 5,000 + amps of output capacity...... More than 5 x the original installation. Controllers for the triple motor configuration are set for 500 amps each and we will be upping that to 600 amps = 20% more torque.

In about 10 man hours, we pull all batteries out, removed 3 battery boxes, transmission w clutch, PP and flywheel, and pulled the motor.

Will provide updates with progress. (Had to drop a couple recent photos of the Fiat project up too.....)
