Hello Gentlemen, Can I call upon your experience on the Steering Rack removal / replacement on my 1979 308 GTB. This comes as a surprise to me as I wasnt expecting to have to repair it. It seems pretty straight forward, but if anyone has any easy tips, Id sure appreciate it. Thanks, Chris.
What's wrong with it? Are you rebuilding your old rack, or buying a rebuilt? It's not too tough of a job. Just bring it out the driver side- that's easier. Replace the mount bushings while you have it out- they are pretty cheap. Pay attention to the steel spacers under each mount bushing during install. This will make sense when you take it out. Leave the mounts attached to the rack until you get it out. Of course, the mounts should stay attached to the rack if you are only rebuilding it. Use locktite on the SMALL bolt/nut that holds the steering column end to the rack. If you are rebuilding your rack, mark the steering column/collar/rack with a punch to help with aligning it to where it was before you took it out. You will see what I mean as you take it apart. You will need an alignment after replacement. Good luck, and please post some pix when you are done. Thanks I'm just a hack (so take my help with some salt), but these tips worked for me when I replaced mine last year. jwise
