I am trying to find a manual for the timing specs for my 1979 308. I'm getting a tune up done and we can't set the timing. Need help!! Thanks.

    It depends...

If you have the original dual dizzy dual point ignition with the infamous microswitch on the throttle for the second set of points (highly unlikely), the idle specification is 3 deg After Top Dead Center (ATDC). This holds the timing at 3 deg ATDC until you touch the throttle, whereapon the switch opens and the timing jumps to 7 deg Before Top Dead Center (BTDC).

If you have the original dual dizzy dual point ignition with the infamous microswitch removed or disabled, or most other ignition setups, then stock timing is 7 deg BTDC.

If you are like me, and you would like the car to run much better, then set it for 12 deg BTDC. Of course, then you would have installed electronic ignition too.

Timing marks are on the flywheel. Take off the cover just under the oil filter to view them. Often very hard to see because the flywheels on these old cars have been resurfaced so many times.

    Your results may vary.
