I just purchased a 1979 308GTB (manufactured DEC 1979) and it has factory installed 1980 interior, is this common?

As there were no model years then its kind of hard to know what you are describing

Minor design changes were installed when the parts came along and more often than not they'd find a few more of the old ones and change back for a while

Probably the injected car interior but specifically oil temp and clock are vertical. Only 1980 had this style.

    You car injected?

It is an 80 model. The manufacture date in the door jamb just tells you when your car was built, not the year model. Ferrari's model year changes occured as early as July of the previous year. In other words someone may have an 85 model that has a July 84 stamp by the door.

Quite likely. It's only the first 3/4 of 1980 for the vertical stack. My 1980 has them side by side & is an Aug/Sep car I think.

it is a carb 308 manufactured 1979. The interior is fuel injected seats, door panels and also the oil and temp gauges are vertical.

    IS this normal?

IMO, normal? Yes and no. No because there are probably only a handfull of late 79 carb cars that got the interior treatment that was coming into form with the new 80 models.

yes because as the carb cars turned into injected you had cross over (parts/spec) as the model evolved..ei there are carb cars with later serial numbers than the first injected cars.

Most likely on the assembly line they ran out of carb car interior stuff as the next version of the interior was being introduced and some late cars got those parts.

If you are asking if you should be concernd that some foul pay has taken place in the cars history, I wouldn't worry about it. Cars at the end/begining of a prodcution run can sometimes end up with things a little different than the mainstream.

worst case is that at some point the interior got tired and an owner sourced a 2vi interior and installed it.

What is the serial number? My '79 308GTS is 30585 and it was built in December 1979. GTS and GTB have their differences but it would be interesting to know when they started to make the changes.

Hope to see you around as I am in MA but not on the Cape too often.

Perhaps a previous owner swapped out the original 2Vi oil burner for a used carb engine.

    Good guess but unlikely.

His car 30501 is at the very end of the carbed cars on the assembly line but not close enough to have been built with the injected cars. The first GTSi is 31039. It isn't until after that car that we begin to see the injected cars being built along side the very very last carbed ones.

Cape308, you have a very interesting car. Unique as hell and I wouldn't worry about the value being affected besides maybe increasing it just because there are not many like yours. I have no doubt in my mind that your interior and engine are both from the factory and I have never seen one in my life like this (and I have been looking at 308's very closely for 33 years). I always predicted they existed. What you have is a car that got caught in the middle of a major model change and emerged and wonderful little hybrid.

    Great car!
