    Hello fellow "F"-chatters,

May I call on you expertise?

Whilst restoring my engine bay on my "79" 308, I came across a piece that I can't determine whether it was "cad' plated or just polished.......

The piece is the torque strut (dog-bone) mounting bracket that affixes to the rear of the car (trunk area), beside the coolant recovery tank.

Any ideas on what the factory did with these, plated, polished, otherwise???

Also, your pics of a restored engine bays would greatly be appreciated!!!

    Thank you kindly,

    Chris.

Almost nothing in that engine bay is polished. Aluminum parts are generally left rough cast and steel parts such as the bracket at the firewall are cad.

I'm thinking the "dogbone" was painted black. The bracket on the firewall was "cad" & the bracket on the engine is unfinished alloy.

all those parts, the dog bone, and the bracket at the rear bolted into the front of the trunk, are painted black on my 77 308

My ex-US '78 matched John Millard's description (athough the "bracket" on the engine side is cast as part of the camcover) -- and it might vary year-to-year (ala camcover painting).

However, if your bracket on the rearwall is a magnetic steel then I think you can safely assume that there was a (poor) initial attempt to give it some corrosion resistance, and, that during previous care, it was just "rubbed off" (i.e., any magnetic steel would require some surface treatment/coating to prevent corrosion just from atmospheric moisture).

If the bracket on the rearwall is a polished non-magnetic stainless steel (or aluminum), I'd guess that it's a custom fabbed replacement.

I don't believe that all that yellowish stuff is cadmium plated. I think, it's just yellow zinc plated.

    Best Regards

    Chris,

That appears to be the case with my 1976 GTB (unrestored engine bay):
