    Hello,

Looking at buying a 79 308 GTB. Something struck me as odd. The info plate in front of steering wheel is solid black (see pic) and on it states 308 GTB Chassis *—————* . On all my other cars it is metallic color stating Ferrari Plus the rest of the info. Is this unusual?

The car and several others was purchased by this dealer from an estate in Beverly Hills 4 weeks ago. Original 1 owner title with 18k miles US Spec even has the original tires on it. Since the owners has passed there is no explanation for it.

I'd have to go with "unusual". The pre-1980 VINs are just a made up combination of characters, but have you tried doing a CARFAX on whatever VIN is shown on its existing paperwork?

One other thing you can do is see if the Engine SN (shown below the engine family marking of F106AE on the top of the engine block at cylinder #1) makes sense for the date of production.

Could it maybe be that at some point the column was changed out due to a malfunction? Or is that section removable to install on another?

Nothing on Car Fax and I had the PPI professional looking for that in specific. Nothing was found that would indicate. So I guess I will either have to be comfortable with the information or walk . Thanks for your replies!

Strange indeed. Is the chassis number stamping on the chassis rail in the engine compartment correct and does it show a legit chassis number? If you provide the s/n, I could check my files. US cars should also have the door plate on the B-pillar with the chassis number.

Mystery solved! Removed the plate and the original was underneath and is all correct as it should be. Apparently the owner didn’t like the way it looked or something.. Strange.
